There was nothing bad about **Crash** , other than the fact that it pissed off people who thought **Brokeback Mountain** was better. In any case, I don’t care what the cool kids like or dislike. I don’t think Crash would be so hated if it hadn’t won Best Picture at the Academy Awards over Brokeback Mountain, Good Night and Good Luck, and Capote, which, and I think most cool kids would agree, were all much better movies. I think Monsanto is still cool to hate, along with corporations in general, probably. I don’t know if it’s still cool to hate Walmart, so many people hate Walmart now that it might be passé for those on the cutting edge of cool. ---

I had (have) no earthly clue that it was “cool” to hate Crash - just the opposite has been my experience. All the “cool” people among my Facebook friends list in in their movie section. I didn’t hate it for any reasons related to popularity - I hated it because it was a ham-fisted cliche-fest that didn’t deserve any of the praise or awards it got. Had it been a movie-of-the-week on Lifetime I might’ve thought “huh, that was decent, I guess. Cheesy, but decent.” But Best Picture? No. I haven’t watched, looked up results, or given the slightest fuck about the Oscars since then. ---

I hate _Crash_ because it made me refer to David Cronenberg’s _Crash_ exclusively as ‘David Cronenberg’s _Crash_’, usually to the merit of blank stares from everybody. ---

I like Starbucks because they’re open when I need to get to work and have serviceable drip coffee. I’d much rather wait for the snooty little coffee shop next door to open (they have much better drip) but I’m not cool enough to get to work late everyday for the cause. This is actually a battle with my inner hipster, because I’m cool enough to bus to work (being green is the new black?) but not cool enough to catch a later bus (stick it to the man!) and get chastised by my Operations Manager. I like Olive Garden because when I’m with large amounts of my Mid Western family at the mall Xmas shopping (I’m uber hip for going to the mall because it’s so unhip that it’s fashionable) we don’t have to cart a bunch of kids and grandparents 45 minutes across town to a bitchin’ little hole in the wall where half of them won’t be able to find something they want and pay $20 apiece per vehicle for downtown parking. The food is not great, but I can survive easily on appetizers, bread sticks & salad with a couple of beers while everyone else is happily devouring their completely uncouth, unauthentic Italian wannabe trash (heathens!) As far as U2 goes, I’m not sure if I’m hip or not. I really enjoy their early Sunday Bloody Sunday era music (it rocked) but am not a huge fan of their soft pop rock newer incarnation. Granted, I haven’t paid much attention to U2 since the Joshua Tree era, but the last song they did that I really enjoyed was New Years Day. I suppose that’s because it rocked (IMHO) while the rest of their recent music that I’ve known seems a little soft. TV - I once had a co-worker who said her husband took their TV outside and shot it because it was evil. All I could think of is how expensive it is to haul electronics to the dump. Couldn’t you at least just put it out on the sidewalk with a free sign on it? Apparently, giving someone a free TV was akin to giving someone AIDS in their eyes. ---

I think the other major reason why cool people hate the 2005 Crash is that it used the same title as the 1996 Crash; the latter of which is undoubtedly a cult movie, based on a novel by a very serious dystopian author with a devoted following, and the former of which is just another ham-fisted, cliched morality tale with a big cast of Hollywood stars and a completely mainstream status. Cronenberg and Ballard were actually angry with Paul Haggis for using the same title. I mean, would it be THAT hard for them to have come up with a new title? ---
