This is a good idea for a thread, but does it belong in the BBQ Pit? Even “fucking assholes” in the title doesn’t turn it into a pitting. But my location is, unfortunately, not a joke. ---

**pseudotriton ruber ruber** , are you sure about this pitting? Many of us, shyly dipping our toes into the internet, choose not to disclose a location at all. Some of us proffer a fanciful location that may be the product of whim or that might allude to some attribute we have or hope to be credited with. But almost all of us post under a pseudonym, a false name that is occasionally appropriate, sometimes witty and almost always fanciful – isn’t that even less straightforward? In a virtual community, even more so than in the 3-D world, we are often the sum of the stories we tell about ourselves. So you are right that “joke locations” are a little dishonest and not much of a positive force in building a community – even an internet one. But the stories themselves, and the names we assume in their telling, are _also_ products of both our history and our honesty. I’m not saying you’re exactly _wrong_ – I’m saying you may have grabbed the tail of the beast you want to strangle. ---

[/QUOTE] To the extent that this is a serious pitting, and I guess I’m saying here it is, I’m calling into question people making a joke out of something that I reckon had a dead-serious purpose to it. The SDMB overlords decided, I’m imagining, to tolerate some screwing around witih the locations early on, for the reasons you state (“on the internet, who knows that you’re a dog” kind of thing) but it’s sometimes annoying to have someone opine about stuff that goes on “here” without letting readers in on where “here” is. But if I was dead set against disclosing my actual location, it would be easy to write “Eastern Seaboard” or just “U.S.” or something that would be both vague and not a joke at the same time. ---
