I live in Central New Jersey. If you are from New Jersey you would know that unless you live on Cape May or High Point everyone considers themselves from Central New Jersey. I thought I would narrow it down a bit more. That’s all you’re getting fuckwad. ---

[/QUOTE] Actually, a postal code in Canada can often give you an exact house, so I’d be mightily miffed if our locations were automatically displayed. Join date and and #posts are stats kept by the boards software so I’m not sure it’s quite a useful example. I know other vB sites have age and IM accounts listed but I hesitate to say the Overlords actually “chose” to leave only the location field there. Given the history of how this place is run, vBulletin probably comes out of the box like that, lol. But more specifically, location is very different from other stats displayed. No internet loony is going to track me down from my age, post count or join date. I think it’s wise to let the users choose the level they are comfortable with and dumb jokes are an inevitable consequence. ---

What about people who provide both a real location and a whimsical piece of information? Or those that use location to show gender? If you are pitting many members, shouldn’t you change your own rather than just explain it in this one thread that most members will not read? You know, put up or shut up. 😉 We have a few posters that use extremely specific locations as they put in latitude and longitude. How do you feel about them? Jim ---

If your location is all that important to a thread, it’s easy to slip a reference into your post. Ditto occupation. Otherwise you might just be seen as boasting. I feel that my location designation is accurate, as it represents the end result of triangulation of all the extreme points of view I hold from around the political spectrum. I also live near the extreme center of Ohio (geographically speaking) in a town so small that groundhogs outnumber people, though it can be hard to tell since there are a lot of physical similarities. ---

As with my username, I prefer to keep a reasonable amount of anonymity. I think that given a number of things that I have posted, if I revealed my exact location people may be able to determine who I am without too much difficulty, and given that I have (perhaps ill-advisedly) posted one or two personal things here, I would prefer that not to happen. Having said that, I put “UK” to lend a little more weight to my opinions in UK-related threads, and to let people know I may not understand some Americanisms. Is that good enough? ---
