# alleged Jewish custom/Babylon 5

When you’re watching Babylon 5 and the announcer says, “Don’t Touch That Dial” . . . he means business!

(I promised myself I’d stop with the jokes. Then I imagined all of the confused Babylon 5 fans lurking this thread . . .)

OK - you want to get into _negiah_ (touching)? Let’s get it on!

It’s really a very simple concept: boys and girls don’t touch. At all.

Wait, wait. Calm down. Yes, you can touch your mother/sister/daughter/Aunt. You can kiss your Grandmother and hug your niece on her _Bat Mitzvah_.

The idea is a straightforward one. It’s the slippery slope argument. Since _Halacha_ forbids certain kinds of touching, it outlaws all of it just to make sure people behave.

Strictly observant Jews do not touch members of the opposite sex for any reason. The courtship between singles is just not a physical affair.
