Alredy convicted of 1st degree murder, why bother with other crimes?

  1. It helps clear-up rates - much better to have three solved morder cases than one solved and two officially not solved

  2. It helps the families know that the murderer has been found and isn’t walking around on the streets. Taking it to trial is what does this because just saying someone probably did it doesn’t mean they actually did

  3. It can help establish a pattern of behaviour that’s relevant to each charge - sometimes it would be difficult to try someone for one murder without the others, like if someone shot three people in one night but were charged with just one; a jury would wonder why the other two cases weren’t being brought to trial

  4. It means that the case isn’t left open, so that someone else could be erroneously charged with it later, or it being connected to cases it’s not actually connected with

  5. It means that if one case ends up having technical problems or whatever the defendant is still in jail for the other crimes

  6. It’s be much cheaper to try someone for all the crimes at once, when the lawyers and court time are already being paid for, than later on if you find that you need to.
