There was one near the Loyola L station through the 70’s and into the 80’s. There was another near Clark Street and Diversy (New Town). The stuff wasn’t bad. My wife who’s from France, stopped eating deep dish forever when they closed. I think I saw one in Lincoln Park not too long ago.
My Pie has a new location on Shermer Road in Northbrook. Initial reports compare favorably to the old place on Clark St. It’s on my short list of places to try in the next month.
Besides the one MikeG mentioned, there’s another one at 2010 N Damen, which the website describes as “mostly carryout and delivery, with a few dine-in seats”.
I may have to take the wife over to one of the existing My π’s for our wedding anniversary. Can anyone possibly forget the original menu? Makes me teary eyed for the lost era of the rabid audiophile.
I’ve been to the (late lamented) Wrigleyville location, and the Madison location. It’s decent pizza, but I wouldn’t put it in the same class with Uno’s, Due’s, Gino’s East, etc.
I think I’ve settled on Uno. The tour boat dock is at Wacker and Michigan, so it’ll be a short walk there. We should be there before 5, so hopefully it won’t be TOO busy. Of course, it’s now looking like it might storm on Saturday, so this whole thing might be moot.
How would two small pizzas do for three people? I figured we would get one sausage and one cheese. We’ll be heading right back to my place afterwards, so I’m fine with having leftovers.
Nothing wrong with Uno or Due, though. With Uno being the progenitor of the style, I definitely think they’re worth a stop for the history, and they do put out a very good pie.
I also very much enjoy Pequod’s (one of Burt’s old places). That’s actually my default choice for when I don’t feel like heading up to Burt’s in Morton Grove, although they’re both a little different than typical Chicago-style deep dish.
This thread inspired me to mail order some good pizza. Unfortunately shipping for Giordano’s was prohibitively expensive, so our delivery of four 9" pizza’s from Lou Malnati’s should arrive today. Yum!
Well, Uno was delicious. It turns out no one in my family has had deep dish before and it was a big hit. We got a small cheese and a medium sausage. Just a medium would be enough for the three of us, but now I have dinner for the next two nights. The cheese pizza was a little too cheesy but the sausage was great. Probably my only criticism was the sauce was a little meh. More like the pasta sauce you would get at a cheap Italian place. A little too sweet maybe?
Too cheesy?? Not possible!
Glad you and your family liked it, though. The sauce is pretty much why Uno isn’t my favorite, but – in case the thread hasn’t driven the point home enough – it’s hard to go wrong with deep-dish anywhere in Chicago.
I hope you’re now inspired to go and try all the others. Then, the next time somebody asks this question you can offer your own expert opinion!
Late to the thread, but my mother grew up in the Shy, and we have family there so it’s a not-uncommon destination for us (much more when I was a kid). I’d had Gino’s several times and it’s very good, but when we were there in December we got a *delivery * order from Lou’s (in the suburbs, yet) and it’s my new favorite.
