# Alternative to ING Direct

I don’t have any recommendations to offer but I’m wondering, **With Rye** , whether you are considering changing because ING is now owned by Capital Bank? That’s why I’m looking to move my savings somewhere else, and will be interested in hearing any recommendations, too.

Well, there are a lot of specifics left out.
-What benefits are you seeking that you aren’t getting from ING, is one of them.
-Also, check out local credit unions. Many of them simply require you live in that county.

What country are you in? I loved First Direct when I was in the UK where they had ING Direct accounts but I have no idea what country you are actually in.

No recommendation, but I moved out of ING Direct when Capital took them over. I didn’t trust Capital not to start dinging me with trumped-up, hidden fees like every other big corporate bank.

[emigrantdirect.com](http://emigrantdirect.com) works for me. Nothing amazing, but it’s an online bank that’s not owned by capital one.

I’m in the same boat. ING Direct was great, but it’s time to leave before Capital One starts looting my account. If emigrantdirect or some other option doesn’t work, I’ll consider just moving the account into my credit union (which is paying approximately zero interest right now - bummer).

We started an account with [Discover Bank](https://www.discover.com/online-banking/) a while ago and we are switching out stuff from ING as they roll over.
One relative had a CC account with Capitol One years ago and it was a nightmare of fraudulent charges (coming from the same block as Capitol One’s HQ!) and repeated credit report lookups (which hurt your credit rating). Took about a half a year to get disentangled from them. (They’d “close” the account, accept a fake charge to the account, re-open it and start charging fees and interest.) Real slime bags.

EmigrantDirect is the one my wife uses (I use IngDirect still). Note EmigrantDirect is owned by GMAC so if you are worried about the big companies it would be out of the frying pan and into the fire, so to speak.

Credit unions don’t even have to be local. Ten or fifteen years ago, a friend living in Massachusetts kept an account at an out-of-state credit union. He mailed any checks to them that needed to be deposited and used ATMs at other credit unions/banks. Today, you could deposit checks using a smartphone app.

Ha, I’m thinking about dropping ING Direct, too, and for the same reason. I might switch to Chase just long enough to get the $200 bonus they’ve been offering, but I need to read through the fine print. Otherwise, ING was my secondary savings so I might just close it and redirect that direct deposit to my regular savings.

I am in the process of switching to [Ally Bank](http://www.ally.com), myself. They have one of the highest interest rates I’ve seen so far and they reimburse ATM fees.

Yeah, I used to do media trafficking for a string of websites, which involves putting the ads up, and keeping track of all the ads and what hits they get.
Did this for a couple of years, and had a gigantic folder of ad banners. I looked through CapOne’s folder to see if I needed to keep it, and I was amazed at how the interest rates for Capitol One loans would change. I mean, they would put a new, higher interest rate up every week, it was nuts. Over the two year time frame the effect was just…wow.

Thanks for the recs. I’ve heard lots of bad rep for Capital One and I’d like to see what other options are out there. I was actually putting it off until they emailed me a few days ago that they’re going to change ING Direct’s logo and name to “Capital One 360” (gross) and I took that for a sign.
I’ll look more into Ally. Just checked; 0.95% for savings (as of today) sounds pretty good.
