Am I (male) committing a crime if I decide to use the ladies bathroom?

Ahh, I have used the men’s room when the line up at the ladies was too long - no biggie…

Except for the time I had to wait in the stall because my FIL was going pee…

Isnt the opposite gender on the door an implied statemen of “stay out if you’ve go the other set of genetalia.”?

I once showered in the ladies room at a campground. I didn’t realize where I was until I heard one of my female friends enter. If different people had entered the bathroom, I’m sure no explanation would’ve kept me out of a free night’s stay on behalf of the county.

I was using the men’s restroom in a Vegas casino when a group of women came in because their restroom was being cleaned and was closed off. Didn’t seem like any of the guys in there minded.

I don’t suppose you’ve been arrested and charged with some obscure crime?

Laws on this subject vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, and may also apply differently based on whether the restroom in question is single-user or multiple user. While indecent exposure doesn’t usually enter into it (women’s rooms, generally speaking, do not have urinals or trenches, and consist of toilets in stalls with doors), this behaviour may be termed as trespassing, voyeurism, or some similar label.

An exception, in most places in North America, is made for male-to-female transsexuals and transgender people. In days of yore, transsexuals had to carry specific documentation of their status, but in the more enlightened days of the new millenium, this is no longer required; any photo ID reflecting their revised gender will do.

At a minimum, though, even if you are not committing any specific legal offence, your presence in the ladies’ room may be misinterpreted, particularly if you are clearly not transgender, and law enforcement may apply more general statutes on breach of peace, especially if you give them a hard time. Also bear in mind that in any place where security guards are employed, the fact that you are not breaking any law will not deter them from taking their own steps.

All that said … um, I find myself wondering what your interest is in doing this, assuming you’re not an actual or aspiring male-to-female. Take it from me: it’s not really any nicer in the women’s room. and women who do the hover-and-squirt wet the seats nearly as much as men with poor aim.

The main beef there isn’t so much accidentally peeing on the seat as NOT wiping it off afterwards. C’mon people, it’s not that hard. And it’s your own freaking pee.

I’ve “borrowed” single-seat/occupant women’s restrooms in convenience stores from time-to-time, when I really have to go and some asshole guy is apparently reading the Sunday paper in the men’s room.

I’ve never used a mulit-seat/occupant women’s restroom.

Wiping anything off of the seat afterwards has never been a problem; I have pretty good aim.

I was once walking past the ladies room in a bar, and two girls walked past me, one trying to drag the other (very drunk friend) into the toilet so she could be sick. She wasn’t strong enough to carry her friend properly, and as I walked past she looked at me and yelled, ‘well? What the hell are you doing? Help me get her in here!’. I did what I was told and helped her carry her friend into the bathroom. 10 seconds later the manager of the bar burst in and yelled, ‘what the hell are you doing? Get out of here!’.

I guess it’s just hard to win sometimes… :frowning:

:smack:

I meant to add to the rest of my post, above:

It hasn’t so far been a problem, legally, or with other customers, or with establishments, when I do this.

But I do it so seldomly that that might not mean anything.

As I said upthread, my interest is purely academic. I’m not transgendered nor do I wish to be. And I’m not a voyeur either.

I don’t know if I’d call it a hobby, but one of the things I do a lot is think about obscure or unusual stuff, especially potential legal gray areas. It’s just a thing I do.

Nope, never…

I remember a case from a few years ago of a lesbian who was kicked out of a bar in Greenwich Village because she used the women’s room and was mistaken for a man. It made all the NYC papers.

I think it was a football game, but my memory of the minor details about this is so bad I could be wrong. If I could remember more details, I could probably google a cite for it.

Why did you do that? I mean, was it optional?

I vaguely remember that the actress Rhea Perlman was arrested for using the men’s room at a Bruce Springsteen concert at one point, but I can’t google up any info.

ratting on someone to Paul Blart and then over-doing your reaction to someone accidentally going in the wrong restroom? sheesh

A guy I worked with for a while when I was 19 moved up to Washington State to live with his girlfriend who was going to school wondered into the ladies lockeroom one day while he was waiting for her got out of class. He said he thought it was empty and just wanted to check it out. As he was leaving a young lady came out from the back of the lockeroom somewhere, fully clothed, and they said an ackward “Hi” and he went back to his car to wait for his girlfriend. On his way to the car a security guard pulled up and detained him. Later he was charged with a misdemeanor sex crime. He didn’t do any jail time but he was on probation for awhile.

Makes me wonder what would have happened if the genders had been reversed.

I happened to be in the mens room during one of the Cincinnati Blues Festivals years ago and actually heard a woman say “Close your eyes, guys, we’re coming in.” And in they came. I got the idea the entire thing was choreographed; someone was keeping score—if three stalls were available, three women came in; if eight stalls were available, eight women came in. I’ve no idea who the scorekeeper was, though. The whole thing worked like a charm, though.
