What the hell?
In addition to the Lacey Act, one reason that Fish and Wildlife may be involved is to determine if there is an equivalent US federal offence to what may be alleged by the Zimbabwean officials if there is an extradition request.
Extradition works on the “double criminality” principle. If the requesting country alleges that the individual has committed offence X and should be extradited, the home country won’t extradite unless offence X is also an offence in the home country.
If Zimbabwe has forwarded an extradition request, Fish and Wildlife would presumably be the best federal agency to consider if the alleged offence in Zimbabwe has a an equivalent US offence for the purposes of the extradition treaty.
Obviously, you don’t appreciate deliberate obtuseness as much as some people.
Yeah. I may be crazy, but I think there’s a middle ground between blubbering senselessly about Mother Earth and dry, pointless hairsplitting.
I mean, I’d think it’d be obvious as to why, if the behaviour of this dentist was habitual, that might actually affect people’s opinion of him.
And human beings are emotional creatures…we can appreciate the nuances of wrongdoing even if there is no legal or logical basis for that opinion.
IOW…just because something may not be illegal, doesn’t make it the right thing to do.
It’s not actually illegal for me to laugh and point at the intellectually disabled kid at the shopping centre…but it’s not the right thing to do. It’s not illegal for me to torment my cat to the point where it’s a neurotic mess…but it’s not the right thing to do. Similarly, I am ALLOWED to keep my kids indoors, never letting them outside ever, and provided I give them Vit D tablets and feed them properly, it’s totally legal…but it’s not the right thing to do.
Are we clear here doorhinge?
I was going to say, poor little sumpins.

No, you’re not the only one.
It just struck me that naming anything in Zimbabwe ‘Cecil’ is some kind of signifier.
The Zimbabwe Task Force are now reporting that Cecil’s brother, Jericho, has been poached in the park. This information came out shortly after another story that said Jericho took over the pride and seemed to be protecting Cecil’s cubs. So now the cubs deaths are pretty much guaranteed when a new male moves in.
You can still choose not to be outraged but I am going to keep being outraged because this isn’t about one or two lions or even several cubs, it’s a much bigger picture of how we treat our planet and its inhabitants.
Your outrage will, no doubt, make all the difference.
Same goes for your lack of it. What might make a difference is how many people feel the same way as you or me.
How people feel is an enormous pile of shit. What matters is what they accomplish. Since I don’t care about this lion, I don’t have to do anything. Other than posting here about your outrage, what have you actually done that has substantive results?
I am getting a bit sick of this attitude that you can’t be upset about something unless you actually do something about it. I have supported numerous wildlife causes over the years and will continue to do so as my personal circumstances allow but I don’t need to give you an account of exactly what I do or have done to get approval from you. It’s just as annoying as those that feel a need put down other people’s concern over a lion by pointing out all the other things wrong in the world, yes we can be upset about more things than one and we can comment on them as we want. I did not tell you that you had to be outraged, I told you why I was. You have every right not to care but you do not have the right to tell me I have no right to care. (Yes, I know I used “right” too many times in one sentence.)
Maybe you’re just a bit annoyed that the anti-outrage thread became the defacto outrage thread?
I wonder if we’ll start getting news reports every time a lion is killed, they should give all of them a name!
Or not.
This is stupid. People don’t accomplish things unless they take action and they don’t take action until they have feelings about something. And a lot of people expressing feelings about something can create the motivation for the small number of people who have the ability to take action.
This is how societal change works. Shitting on people’s feelings is just a way to rob them of their agency and to prevent any kind of change.
What a very eloquent defense of impotent internet whinging as something meaningful.
I got the impression, from a brief holiday in Zimbabwe some 25 years ago (and I may have things wrong here), that many black Zimbabweans have, “despite everything”, quite a soft spot for Mr. Rhodes – seeing him not as an imperialist villain, but rather as a big historical figure and mover-and-shaker, commanding some respect.
This is a warning for you. Everyone in here has been asked twice now to stop with the jabs, insults, and snark. Do not reply to this thread if you cannot do that, make a Pit thread.
