"Amadeus" for a kid's middle name - tacky?

One of my first and favorite choices for my first son’s first name was Wolfgang after Mozart. My wife would have none of it. My wife’s mother, who is German thought it was very cool as well, but we were all out-voted by my wife.

Wow. My comment warranted a ?! Anyway, yes Amadeus is an exotic name in my corner of the world. When I meet a guy at the local honky-tonk named Billy-Joe Amadeus Armstrong drinking a Bud with his girlfriend, Mandy Euphrosyne Smith, I’ll concede the point to you.

I think it’s far superior to “filler names” like Lynn and Marie which are pasted between every other girl’s first and surname these days. And the OP stated she loves Mozart’s music, so it’s a way to honor her idol. It’s not like she chose it randomly out of the air. And even if she did – it’s her damn business.

I like it. Alot.
Considering we had the name Wolfgang on the top of our list for our son. Wolfgang for the german heritage and Mozart. But the fact that most Americans’ cannot pronounce Volfgahng properply and he would be teased by farging idiots, we named him Carsten.

I like the orginal name, Thaddeus, much better. OTOH, it was a college aquantince’s name, so Thadd sounds pretty typical to my ears.

Go for it. Does anyone like their middle name anyway? Mine is Frances. I was called “Frank the tank” in my tomboy days. I loathe the name…but I like that it is part of me.

It’s a middle name! Middle names are almost like secret codes. Only the govt and those you chose to tell know them.

My child has a horribly boring middle name (his dad chose it). No tease value at all. In retrospect I would have given him Bono as a middle name (unusual, recognisable and I’m sure tease worthy) or Richard (I’d love to say…but your name is Dick :D).

First names are all about presenting yourself to the world, middle names are family secrets. I say go with Amadeus.

I also think the name Amadeus is pretty cool but even if I didn’t I’d still say just call the kid whatever you like and to hell with other people’s opinions.

My brother and his wife called my niece by an unusual name. None of us liked it much at the time but now I just associate the name with my adorable little niece and wouldn’t change it for anything. It’s your kid - you make the decision on what to call it for whatever reason. The name will just become associated with the child first and foremost very quickly among friends and family.

That said I wouldn’t go overboard and name a kid lardass or monkeyfeatures or something but I don’t think choosing Amadeus is likely to cause your kid too many problems if any. It might even be a good talking point/ conversation starter which could be useful to him…

I usually prefer more traditional names for first names, but I really like Amadeus as a middle name. It has a nice sound to it…unusual while still being recognizable to most people. I think it is an elegant name.

Personally, I think he’ll probably be embarrassed by it. But at least it’s just his middle name, he doesn’t have to tell anyone what it is, or he can make something up if he’s too embarrassed by it.
