A quick look at the BBC Dr Who site reveals that Brian Blessed played King Yrcanos in Trial Of A Timelord: Mindwarp.
Also Peter Duncan was in Flash Gordon.
The dude that dies in the forest by sticking his hand in the stone thingy.
He used to be a “Blue Peter” presenter and also hosted “Duncan Dares”, as a kid I hated him.
Kids tv presenters in movies, that’s just wrong, all wrong.

“GORDON’S ALIVE???”
We’re all kindred spirits here…<sniffles>
He was also Hamlet’s father in Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet.
An amazing film.
‘Flash! Flash, I love you! But we only have fourteen hours to save the Earth!’
Brian Blessed has been in damn near everything, from Z Cars onwards.
General rule of thumb (based on two appearances in Space: 1999 and one in Blake’s Seven: if you run into Brian Blessed on a strange planet, he is up to no good, run away.
Peter Duncan also appeared in Space: 1999 (guest villain on a second season [i.e. very bad] episode), and on one episode of The Tomorrow People. Both are recommended if you want to watch Peter Duncan age rapidly to death, or get hit very hard on the head.
Another stalwart character actor to appear in Flash Gordon was John Hallam - when you know who he is, you spot him in all sorts of things, Doctor Who, The Black Adder, Moonbase 3, The Professionals … his path previously crossed with Peter Wyngarde’s in both Department S and Jason King.
Hmm. Who else have we got? Suzanne Danielle, turns up a few times, lead role in Carry On Emanuelle, guest roles in Doctor Who and Hammer House of Horror - I remember that episode! It was filmed, at least partly, in my home town …
Stanley Lebor - was in the same Tomorrow People as Peter Duncan, you see a lot of him, too … best known to me as Howard in Ever Decreasing Circles. Kenny “R2-D2” Baker. Oliver MacGreevy, bald stock heavy from The Prisoner among others. John Hollis, other bald stock heavy, Doctor Who, Blake’s Seven, and The Tomorrow People again. And Deep Roy, familiar to Who and Seven viewers, as “Aura’s Pet” - dammit, that’s my job.
Flash! Flash I love you! But we only have fourteen hours to save the Earth!
Man I love that movie, and Queen doing the soundtrack was a stroke of pure genius.
“Flash Gordon…quaterback…New York Jets.”
The Jets?
Mmm. Sam Jones. Kept that copy of Playgirl for a long, long time.
Man-- HBO used to play this movie constantly.
Ole Ming- he certainly was a romantic:
Peter Wyngarde also released an exceptionally odd album during the sixities called “When Sex Leers Its Inquisitive Head”. Among other oddities in contains a song called “Rape” in which details the differences between rapes in various cultures.
The Man is mad as a Mad thing covered in Mad dust.
“He seems to be playing some kind of barbaric game. Match him”
(the guards get down in 3-point stances)
Dale cheerleads - “Go, Flash, Go!”
That movie is so cheesy and stupid, you can’t help but love it.
I wouldn’t trust that bit of info. I have found that IMDB sometime confuses performers with the same name.
To HELL with FLASH Gordon…what about FLESH Gordon? That guy had a huge one!
eBay is your friend; that’s where I got my DVD. It even includes the scene, inexplicably missing from some video releases, of Dale kicking ass after she blisses out the slave girl. Gotta love combat cartwheels.
The actress who played Dale went on to be the sidekick in Manimal.
“Open Fire! All Weapons! I take full responsibility, in the Emperor’s name!”
“Where are the weapons?” “Feel one.”
“Dispatch War Rocket Ajax to bring back his body!”
“I like you a lot.” (soundtrack moans)
“I just love initiations.”
“Lying bitch!”
I’ll stop now.
At one point, a woman yanks on a leash attached to a dwarf and says, “Come along, Fellini”. This is a double in-joke because:
1.) Federico Fellini used to do the Italian version of the Flash Gordon comic strip during WWII, when Italy was cut off from the US comics.
2.) Dino de Laurentiis, exec. producer of this mess, used to work for Fellini. I get the feeling this is a comeuppance.
Another comment. I first saw this movie in the theater on December 6, 1980. The reason I remember that date is that I had been in a blue funk all day. I’d been supposed to drive to another town that morning, to take the Foreign Service exam, and woke up way too late. So I went to the movies as a distraction . I came out of this flick wonderfully cheered up, so much so that I went to see it again the next night.
The Flash Gordon cartoon was the best thing Filmation ever did! A very fond memory from childhood Saturday mornings.
Has anyone noticed that the theme from Big O is a shameless ripoff of the Queen Flash Gordon theme song?
“Scientists say the unexplained solar eclipse is no cause for alarm.”
Their Tarzan cartoon was great too. And, as I’ve said before, used the same sound effects library.
Re- Brian Blessed
I’ve always felt that Blessed isn’t hamming it up, but playing a character who hams it up. Vultan really lives by the philosophy “Eat, drink and be merry. For Ming may call us all at any moment.”
‘I probably shouldn’t trip the guards trying to catch the earthling. Ming is less than a hundred feet away. Ah, what the hell. Damn, that felt great.’
‘I probably shouldn’t re-activate the platform and kill Klytus. Ming will almost certainly find out and have me tortured to death. On the other hand, when am I gonna get another chance like this.’
‘Flash’s plan will probably fail and we’ll all die. But what a way to go! If only there was time and a clear sky, I could direct my hawkmen to spell out some insulting message. Ah well. Forward to our glorious and pointless deaths. Dive!’
'Ming’s dead? I am now going to through the biggest kegger the universe has ever known. ’
And can you really blame him?
