The Homo Floresiensis hobbits, that is.

Archaeologists nicknamed the fossils “hobbits” because they were short. Turns out they’ve got much more in common- it’s outright eerie.

> “The coincidence is astonishing, and the impact on our understanding of the hominid family tree is immense”, De Santos says. “I can’t see how anyone can maintain [that H floresiensis isn’t a separate species] in the light of this finding.”

It doesn’t \*settle \*the matter of whose humor is more nerdy (Tolkien fans or archæeologists), but it certainly brings the question back to the forefront…

Beautiful. Wish I’d a had that pic when I taught anthropology.

However … I’m sure everyone else on here is thinking the same thing I’m thinking so I won’t even say it.

Besides small size, there’s another coincidence. Hobbits had extraordinarily [long feet,](http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/the-foot-that-may-prove-hobbits-existed-1680405.html) in fact longer than any other member of our branch of the primate tree.
