No, really what was up with that massage? Is that _really_ something that locals there get? The girls’ backs were covered in bright red scratches and huge bruises! ---

I’ve had the hot cups treatment before and that part, at least, shouldn’t be painful at all. It feels a little odd but not painful. But after it’s done, it looks like someone just beat the hell out of you. My back was absolutely _covered_ on bruises for a week or so afterward. It did release a ton of tension, though. ---

I know you’re joking, and almost certainly already know this, but the movie about Betheny is named [Soul Surfer](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1596346/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1). I found that movie pretty much unwatchable, btw. They dialed the cloying, treacly religious preaching up to 11. ---

If you said “I’m sick of looking at wiggly stump” I would have to agree. Didn’t they do some incredibly painful foot massage in China, several seasons back? And there was the horrible chest waxing task in Brazil a few seasons ago. Seems like the location scouts and producers seek out agonizing local traditions. Yeah it’s a real thing, and yeah, it does help. The cupping reduces tension, the scraping is generally done to release “bad air” - whether psychotropic or not I’m not sure, but if I’m feeling “flu-ey” it does make me feel better. ---
