> What did the cop say after getting the grapes? “If I can find cocaine in someone’s butt, I can find some marked grapes” ?

I think it was crack, but yes. The relating of Race tasks to police work is starting to wear very thin. We get it, that’s your narrative story, but come on.

I’d really like it if the producers stopped making the contestants fulfill a role, and just let them race.

I’d also really like it if they could maybe stop editing in a pejoratively toned “the _lesbians_” comment from at least one team every week. Or, as we got from Caite this week, “the stupid lesbians.” It’s starting to grate. (Especially since one of them isn’t a lesbian at all.)

But… but… but…

They are stupid (at least, the dark haired one is). And they are lesbians, or at least, they’re dating each other, what other qualifications do they need to fulfill?

Also, I like hearing the cops talk about being cops. It beats the endless repitition of “Baby!” from all the other teams. Although the cops do it too and I think it’s hilarious.

Wait, I think they’re both lesbians – aren’t they dating? It’s the brothers team where one of them is straight.

The nickname is a little awkward but I don’t think people are using “lesbians” as pejorative, it’s just a shorthand way to distinguish them from the other teams.

Don’t get too caught up in the cops’ success; it’s not like they’ve been consistently winning TAR legs like the Cowboys did at the start of the season. The cops got a big lead three episodes ago, then coasted through two straight legs without a single bunching point. That they didn’t run into any pitfalls speaks well of them, but it’s nowhere near as impressive as Jet & Cord were in the early weeks. Same thing applies to the lesbians.

Basically, all the teams are in the same order they finished three weeks ago. That was the leg where team Big Brother’s cab mistakenly drove them way out into the boondocks, making them come in last place by several hours. No surprise that they started and finished the next two legs in last by several hours. (They started this leg three hours behind first, and a full hour behind second-to-last.) So a very unfulfilling way to oust them, IMO. In hindsight it would have been better to just boot them when that one cabdriver singlehandedly ended their game instead of prolonging it as a NEL and then putting two actual racing legs back to back right after it.

> No, the statue clue was a cork with a clue to the Roadblock (the champagne cellar) in Épernay. I think the tourist office got that one right. It was after the Roadblock that most of the teams got misdirected back to Reims.

Yep, I was confused. On rewatching, part of the reason I was confused is because everything was so interwoven this episode, though in fairness that’s pretty common on the show. I had trouble identifying who all everyone asked, but I did catch four:

Cops asked a random hotel, got correct directions (and a guide!)
Lesbians asked a random B&B, got correct directions
Dan & Jordan asked a tourism board, got wrong directions
Jeff & Jordan asked a tourism board, got wrong directions

That still kinda bugs me.

Gotta wonder what the woman at the other place was thinking, seeing these random pairs of Americans with backpacks and cameramen showing up looking for the wrong place.

I guess I’m in the minority, but the comment one of the cops made about finding crack in a guy’s rear end had me actually laughing out loud (and as an aside, those really were beautiful grapes). That and the Noah of Ark conversation, and the Gong of Stupidity every time Caite walked past a marked bunch of grapes and didn’t notice it because she was too busy bitching at Brent…I was laughing through a lot of this episode.

Best moment, though, was when the half-gay brothers were pouring that huge bottle of champagne onto that stack of four glasses and somehow managed to pull it off. I can’t believe they managed that.

They are two women and yes, they are dating. However one mentioned in the intro bios that she had been married and divorced, and neither has stated that they identify as lesbian. So it’s lazy and probably inaccurate shorthanding and yes, it’s often said with a nasty pejorative sounding tone, especially by Caite. They’re a same-sex couple, that’s all we know.

I thought the grapes were plastic.

Come on, Cowboys. You’d better move into high gear. Into a gallop from a lope.

I did laugh at the cops line. The lesbians (and I’ll continue to call them that) are still annoying. The two boy/girl couples were laughably idiotic. The Noah/ Joan of Arc was priceless. I was surprised at how the brothers managed the champagne tower. I’d’ve blown that. And I don’t think they actually rappelled. I didn’t see them manipulating their speed with a rope.

The Cowboys just need to stop and focus and they’ll get right back on track. Looking at Google Maps, their first side trip added 40 minutes to their time. Considering that they only lost one spot, that’s pretty good.

It seems like this leg was just last the last, where there was only one major shakeup, only in the opposite direction. Carol and Brandy jumped up to 2nd thanks to getting good directions, and everyone else dropped a spot.

I’m more interested in the next episode, which will probably start with a flight. I’m wondering if the cops finishes have been because of skill or momentum. They were already down to 3rd when they got to the first clue box, but got lucky with good directions and the cowboy’s mistake.

I thought it was funny when one of them said, “We’re driving through the French countryside, following a guy in a Porsche. What could be better?” My comment was, “Um…being the guy in the Porsche?”

Louie has been [investigated for possible involvement in a cocaine ring](http://www.tv.com/amazing-race-16andaposs-louie-stravato-linked-to-investigation-of-cocaine-ring/webnews/48621.html), so perhaps he is very good at finding drugs in people’s butts. (Not that that’s so hard, right? A butt is much smaller than a vineyard, after all.)

**jayjay** , I think it was a Great Flood of champagne, to keep with the ark theme.

Wow. That is some ridiculously tortured PC pretentiousness.

And did you ever stop and think that the nasty tone people get around the lesbians is because the dark-haired lesbian is a pretty nasty person?

I have to agree. I suppose it is possible one or the other is bisexual or something, but we’re not having an in-depth discussion of sexual politics, we’re using shorthand to differentiate people. Cord describes himself as a professional bull rider, but to us he’s just one of the “cowboys.” Is that insulting?

I also agree that Brandy is the most awful person on this season, with Caite coming in a close second. “I didn’t sign up for this!” Really?! Not to mention calling people stupid, practically to their faces.

I’m sorry that the wrong Team Bimbo (now I admit \*that \*is deliberately insulting ;)) got eliminated. Jordan seemed pretty dim, or at least monumentally ignorant, but she was nice and seemed game to race. And Jeff was hilarious and sweet. Meanwhile, Caite is being a total bitch, and Brent isn’t exactly letting it roll off his back.

I realized just how much I like the cowboys when it seemed they were in danger this ep. But I was still very impressed by their relative calm and their determination to enjoy their adventure. They just seem like very cool people.

OK, on their [team page](http://www.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race/bio/carol_and_brandy_16/bio.php?season=16), Carol has “coming out” listed as one of her major accomplishments, and Brandy identifies as bisexual. So, yes, technically they are the “same sex dating couple.” Really, that’s only twice as long to get out than “lesbians”. Still, to be most clear, people should probably say, “Same sex dating couple and I’m saying that in a peevish voice, not because I’m homophobic—really, some of my best friends are gay and I even went to a gay wedding once and brought a really nice gift—but because they are not nice people. Carol and Brandy, that is. The gays, as a whole, are fine.” That should do it.

Which isn’t evident to anyone that hasn’t read the TAR website.

As far as the show is concerned, they are a same-sex female couple in a committed relationship. You can dress that up however you’d like, but saying they’re lesbians as a shorthand is not wrong.
