They can and should be allowed to train whenever they want to. Training at night makes perfect sense if you operate at night. I also don’t see anything wrong with training in a hostile place like Afghanistan. Makes it all the more realistic.
And from what I understand, they were in a designated restricted area (i.e., pilots need permission to enter it), so they should have been safe from the combat air patrols. I think they did everything right.
