Huh. The Ian who was in my first-grade class back around 1973 was from an Indian family, thought I don’t know whether he was born there. His younger brother was named Rowan. Definite British influence.
Sadly, the kids didn’t “get” this lovely name and teased him mercilessly by calling him “Eeyore.” Or they would ignorantly mispronounce it “Eye-ANN.” Bastards. He was a nice kid. I wish I remembered more of the times I went to play at their house.
Ian Gomez, who is married to Nia Vardalos, was born in NYC.
A guy my dad used to work with over 15 years ago was Ian but he used the eyein’ pronunciation.
My son (4-years-old) is named Ian.
And, although he is a Canadian, Ian Tyson is very well known in the Traditional Western music scene.
I went to high school with a kid named Eon pronounced Ian. At the time, I didn’t know any better. Now I feel sorry for the guy.
There’s a TV sports guy (NFL football?) named Ian Eagle. He’s another “Eye-an.”
Major points for remembering Akin & Garvey.
Ian Somerhalder, who plays Boone on ABC’s “Lost.”
My little brother, who is named Ian, has had a few people mishear his name and think he was named Anne.
I know several American Ians, including the 32-year-old son of a friend, 2 children under the age of ten, and one whose parents emigrated from Scotland shortly before he was born.
Also one dog - a Border Collie.
[Hijack] This reminds of being in a Chicago bar several years ago while on holiday in the US and having some girl named Anne pick me up (I’m not bragging - this almost never happens). The bar was very loud and she had a thick accent and I had to get her to yell her name several times because I thought she was saying “Ian”. [/Hijack]
I have an 18 year old nephew named Ian. I’m sure he will be famous someday.
British-influenced names coming out of India shouldn’t really be a surprise, should they?
My half-brother’s name (we’re American) is actually Ian Holm.
No, no relation to the actor. Not even any English heritage. Much confusion for years.
