It’s not like they’re memorizing the _Iliad_ either. They’re asked to memorize one verse of what is usually some simple Motown song or familar classic rock song. The ones that whine for another chance after they blow the words are missing the point. The judges aren’t looking to be convinced that they can sing, they’re looking to see if these idiots can be trusted to be able to memorize and perform new songs week after week without freezing on stage. Remembering the words _is_ the test, or at least a big part of the test. It’s not a hard one either. The stupid little dance routines and outfits don’t mean shit. They’re looking to see how you sing solo, how you sing backup, and if you can remember the words. The pros always know that, the amateurs never do. ---

All those 16 year olds don’t KNOW any Motown OR classic rock. I’d like to see each one sing Pants On The Ground, myself. ---

I’d say they’re also looking for someone who can do as they’re told and take direction, and take this opportunity seriously. There was one guy a couple of years ago (Corey Something?) who was out partying instead of learning his songs and doing what he was supposed to do, and somehow they kept him around. I found that damned near offensive; if he’s not going to take this seriously, kick his ass to the curb and call in one of the next people on the list who will. ---

Group night always reminds me of not getting picked for sports in grade school. Bleah. I have lots of sympathy for people who know what they’re doing (and are working their asses off to do it) trying to deal with all the drama queens/slack asses/idiots. Group night more than anything else shows the age of these kids. I always wonder about the groups that keep working and practicing practically all night - how do some get things done in an hour, and others can’t get it in 12 hours. First group (Faith) - not quite good. All three through, though. Eh. Awesome - Michael Lynch, Tim Urban through. Okay. Neapolitan - Pink hair Liz should be going home. Black shiny pants girl was good. All through again - LIz was weak. Destiny’s Wild - These guys were almost better - it didn’t quite gel. They all stay too. Everyone’s going through? They need to get rid of _some_ people! The Mighty Rangers - Mark, Kimberly, Danny - bye. Don’t beg indeed. They got rid of some weird looking people - coincidence? One girl bails - group falls apart. Bad, bad, bad. Simon calls them on “everything we went through” - rubbish, indeed. Two still go through (even though one of them screwed up the words). I hope Asian guy (John Park) got through - I liked his singing. Oh, he did - good. “Closer” singers were good - nice. Janelle, Casey and Jermaine - I like them. Good for Casey - it looked a bit out of his comfort zone. Dreamers group (with Mary Powers clashing with everyone) - oh boy. Are they sabotaging themselves on purpose? Mary should have been able to sing Fleetwood Mac in her sleep. I hate that they keep showing the same people and not showing people who get comments like, “You could win the whole thing.” ---

The one thing I don’t understand is why-- WHY did those groups choose that Gwen Stefani song? At this point the judges are looking for reasons to boot you. Simon said ‘Learn the words or go home.’ And yet so many picked that song with that jumble of words. I only saw one group get it right. ---

But he had that guy mixed up with another guy who was tubby and had no visible tattoos and wasn’t hispanic, didn’t wear glasses, and had a completely different voice and singing style. I guess it’s an honest mistake. ---

Neck tat guy is very clearly a tubby fuggo. The other guy was a bit tubbier, but not quite as fuggo. I can see how one might get them confused. ---

In any case, whether or not you think Neck Tat is handsome, I think that’s an accurate description for Begging Crybaby. He did wear glasses, by the way. ---
