I think this is my first time posting in one of these threads, but my mom told me somebody did Teen Spirit last night. It didn’t work for me. It sounded like he was looking for places to add some extra notes in the verses, either because that’s the style of the show or to make it a little different from the original. That didn’t add anything. He was pretty weak on the verse and alright on the coda. I’m assuming he did one verse and one chorus (plus the coda) because of time constraints and they all have to deal with that.

Yeah - they were pretty flat.

Completely agree. Lithium is a more melodic song. Teen Spirit is pretty monotonous by design and it’s not really supposed to be expanded upon. Come As You Are also would have been better, I think.

I liked James, Jacob, Pia, and Thia the best. Karen looked nice but was dull. Lauren sounded way off, Naima just looks pissed at the world, Paul’s voice is getting irritating, Stefano was good, Casey picked the wrong song but has the right attitude–a little subversion never hurt… Haley still does not sound good to me, Scotty is okay but he is going to sound country no matter what he sings.

Add me to those who think _Lithium_ would have been a better selection; although Teen Spirit is better known, which seems to affect the voting.

Does Fox get squicky about lyrics? Lines like “I’ll kill you, I’m not gonna crack” may not go over well with some folks.

Ah, it’s all turned out just fine. I wouldn’t mind if either one of those bottom two had gone.

No kidding! He really needs to lose that affectation–it’s just weird-looking. They should put a shock collar on him and give him a jolt every time he starts leaning over.

Yep, Lee has still been bobbing for caterpillars.

My only complaint this week was the unfair bashing of Thia for somehow not picking something more profound and mature. She’s 15 fer Og’s sake. If a Disney ballad feels deep to her, then let her sing it. When I was 15 I though Def Leppard’s _Rock of Ages_ was speaking directly to my soul, so let’s cut her some slack for being a kid.

Next week is going to be Motown week, AKA “Make sure a black female makes the tour” week.

Not that I mind–I think Naima is a lot more talented a singer than she’s shown the last two weeks (the Donny Hathaway reprisal wildcard sing-out proves it) and she absolutely deserves a spot on the tour. But the AI people like a tour with diversity, and I don’t know if they’ve EVER had a top 10 without at least one black woman in it.

Yeah, that hasn’t happened since way back in…[last year](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Idols_LIVE!_Tour_2010). 😉

That was a wasted appearance from the Black-Eyed Peas. Indeed, they may have actually been wasted, for all the energy they seemed to bring.

Pia makes me think of a Eurovision contestant from some southern European country. Greece, maybe. Or Malta.

Actually, it helps if you think of AI in Eurovision terms. It’s a lot funnier that way.

I don’t understand their appeal. They can’t sing, can’t play anything, perform nothing memorable, yet they get to play halftime, among other things.

The judges were all over the place last week - for Thia it was, show us something different, you’re always singing the same songs, and for someone else (Haley, I think it was), it was you have to find your voice, quit singing different songs each week. If I could say one thing to AI contestants every year, it would be to find a good song that is well within your range each week and sing the holy shit\* out of it - nothing more, nothing less.

\*And by singing the holy shit out of it, I mean doing exactly what the song requires - slow crescendo or come out of the gate swinging or whatever.
