From [Greenville SC papers](http://www.greenvilleonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070321/NEWS01/703210394/1004/NEWS01):

> [@](#):
>
> At Bob Jones, where the son of overseas Christian missionaries studied music before leaving for North Greenville, his Hollywood adventure hasn’t been embraced institutionally.
>
> While not on an overt mission to denounce Sligh’s participation in “American Idol,” BJU spokesman Jonathan Pait said the school has distanced itself from any connection between Sligh’s affiliation with the university and the talent show watched by millions.
>
> “One of the reasons he left Bob Jones is he had chosen another direction musically, and he was not going to get that type of training here,” Pait said.
>
> The show, Pait said, doesn’t represent the values of the university.
>
> “It’s not any ill thoughts toward Chris because he made that decision,” Pait said. “Chris is a likeable guy. We wish him well in his life.”

The one point where Gina actually changed the melody of “Paint it Black,” I liked. The general flatness through much of the rest caused me to wonder if she forgot she’d changed the key. It was less … memorable … than R. Star’s [version](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wN2w-1BJstE) on _Rock Star: Supernova_, but in a good way. I like her, though, for what she did right in picking & delivering the song.

Of course, the performance that made me think of RS:SN was “You Really Got Me.” It was a _little_ bit like a Zayra Alvarez over-the-top girl-punk performance, in that it had me biting my thumb until I couldn’t help but laugh. However, [Zayra](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grS4m2IQYrs) is a crazy genius (& owned that song). Sanjaya’s just a quavering kid.

Lulu did rock as a coach/mentor.

Wow, don’t any of you women recognize Little Crying Girl? She’s that 12- or 13-year-old Beatles fan who’s screaming and crying and living the dream of her life while under Maximum Hormonal Load – practically an archetype! In fact, back in the summer of 1967, she was nearly ME, when I won a front-row ticket to a Beatles concert…and my father made me go CAMPING instead, so I had to GIVE it to my girlfriend. Who TOUCHED PAUL McCARTNEY. (Who me, bitter much?)

So I nearly wet myself laughing sympathetically over Little Crying Girl.

As for who should go, of course it should be Sanjaya. It’ll probably be Phil or Stephanie, though.

6 Degrees of Separation Trivia: Lulu used to be married to the late Maurice Gibb. Her ex-brother-in-law, Barry Gibb, is also slated to be a coach/mentor later in the season. David Ian, who was in the audience (sitting directly behind Peter Noone), produced both “Saturday Night Fever” and “Grease” on Broadway. Gibb wrote music for both movie versions. Ian is currently appearing on Grease casting show “You’re the One that I Want.” Nigel Lithgoe produces that show, and he was also in the audience. David Ian is partners with Paul Nicholas, who appeared in the ill-fated “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band,” which starred the late Maurice Gibb. 🙂

I thought **Jordin** ’s song was the highlight of the show. I’d buy a single of that song in a heartbeat. She’s 17? Wow. She’s got both the look, the emotion, and the range to be the real deal.

Lakisha should have listened to Lulu. She has an Eartha Kitt quality about her singing. Melinda did great and she has a Gladys Knight quality to her. Haley did fine, though she needs to get over those nerves.

I think that Sanjaya will go next, though I agree that last night was the best he’s done so far, which ranks slightly below a good karaoke singer.

If Chris was going to walk though the audience, he should have at least made eye contact with an audience member. Even Sanjaya has that part down. And I thought Sanjaya’s sister (I’m assuming it’s his sister) was beautiful.

Paula seemed lucid last night.

I think it’s pretty funny that both Lulu and Peter Noone look better now than they did in the 60’s.

I think Sanjaya, Gina, and Phil are in trouble. It’s a damn shame that Ryan Seacrest can’t be voted off.

Are people really that down on Stephanie? I like her better than Chris R., heck I like her better than LaKisha. But then I am neither a teenager nor a girl.

Oh, & Sligh, I like you & all, & you did OK, but when it comes to audience relating, you’re no [Guy Sebastian.](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_sebastian) You treated them like an obstacle course & played to the camera. If you want to sell tickets, show a little more connection with the live audience, OK?

I’m not sure how meaningful that is, since the student body is composed of people from all 50 states plus 43 other countries.

Right . . . people from all kinds of geographical places with one thing in common. Are you seriously arguing that their religious beliefs are as varied as their home addresses?

Agree about Lulu. She’s just cute as pie and still has a voice on her. IIRC, though, Peter Noone looked a lot better when I was 12 and his poster was pinned to my wall.

Then again, so did I. Forget I mentioned it.
