If that is indeed what DSeid is saying, then I agree with him. It is too bad that there was not an opportunity at every turn for Obama to dwell on the issue of religious culture.
I guess it was the Colin Powell thing that got me. Contrasting him to Obama, as though Powell did the right thing while Obama didn’t, just flew all over me — especially since the two of them did the exact SAME thing. If it matters to DSeid, I would have been assuaged had he simply responded something like, “Oh, my bad, you’re right! Obama did at least as much as Powell.” Instead, the rejoinder was more along the lines of, “Yeah, okay, so Obama did it just that one time. Big deal.” Things descended from there.
And another thing: DSeid set Colin Powell up as the standard. I had told him that Obama had said the attacks were insults to Muslims, he insisted I go dig up a cite. So I did. And he pretty much just tossed it out, even saying that Obama said what he said as an afterthought! I mean Jesus. I fucking HATE it when people demand a cite, and then act all ungrateful like you were their indentured servant who should have known to bring them some tea.
featherlou is probably right - this really had been settled nearly as much as it could be settled and is really a minor thing. I probably should have just ignored Rand. cervaise is definitely right and I really do not know why what I said was so misunderstood, I tried hard to say it clearly, and to resay it more clearly, but Lib took it how he did and so it goes. Lib, I will keep this inanity going long enough to point out that there is a difference. Powell was rarely in the public eye this campaign and when he was he took on Islamophobia strongly. Again, I totally stand corrected in my hyperbole of “not at all” but many of us were struck by how quiet on the subject he was, even though we recognize that was a much as he was “realistically possible” to do, given political realities that included such a pervasive Islamophobia in this country. And it was added as if an afterthought with acknowledgement that he has been “derelict” in bringiing it up more. I stand by that as well. To me your cite illustrated the place it needed to keep in his campaign. He knew he was being derelict in bringing it up more; he really had to be so “derelict” That’s the reality.
Apparently white guys do get pulled off planes for inappropriate jokes. It’s not quite equivalent to the subject of the OP getting pulled off for talking about safety, but apparently security theater targets whites (or at least those with European last names who I assume to be white) occasionally. Color me surprised.
This is still an overreaction, as “Are you the one who checks for shoe bombs?” is a long way from “I have a shoe bomb” or any allusion to having a bomb.
Powell’s remarks were also tacked onto the end of his endorsement just like Obama’s. The fact of the matter is that you have no idea what you’re talking about. You did not know about the CNN worldwide broadcast, just as you do not know that as early as February of last year, Obama was already defending Muslims as well as himself against the slurs. As Associated Press reported then, “Obama has become careful in denouncing the links [to false rumors], lately noting that some rumors about him also have been insulting to Muslims.” If you want a link to that cite, I’m afraid you’ll have to Google it yourself. I’m just not willing, at this point, to do any more grunt work for you. Your complaint has no merit.
