I think this is a relatively recent practice. I don’t remember seeing veggies being sprayed 20 years ago; could be mistaken.
I am too cynical to think it helps the produce in any way. I think it is to make it look more appetizing, as though it were drenched in the morning dew.
I personally hate having to shake the water out of my lettuce when I pick it up to buy it. And wet produce has a *shorter * life once you take it home and refrigerate it in a plastic bag, not longer.
When I was a child (20 years ago, tomorrow I turn 28) they definitely had the thunder sound and then the sprayers at Kroger. I loved it because it reminded me of the zoo, when they had a “rainforest storm” in the bird house every day at 2 or something.

I remember this too, and it was at least 20 years ago.

They don’t really plan their irrigation tactics all that well at times. Yesterday I was in a Whole Foods and grabbed a package of celery hearts that was in the manufacturer’s plastic…recieving a healthy dose of mist.
But yeah, no…that helped a lot. The cellophane was nice and lush.

Awww! Happy birthday! My birthday’s tomorrow, too! And I too remember the clockwork mist in the bird sanctuary…and Albertson’s…and Busch Gardens.

Yup, they still have the sound at the Krogers I go to.
