Yeah, I’m buying a US flag for the first time in my life and hanging it on my fence (lacking a flagpole) with my two homemade signs from the march: NO KINGS And No Gestapo Either, and HONOR THE CONSTITUTION. Other than that, I’ll be monitoring my horse and my sensitive dog, both panic over fireworks. You can’t see anything from here and my nieghborhood is composed mostly of sheep, but you can hear the booms. My goats, hens, and other dog seem to pay no attention to them at all. Perhaps I will play some patriotic songs. Fuck them. ---

I have to work on the Fourth, but luckily that also means getting to celebrate part of the day. I’ll be covering our little town’s annual parade which is a nearly 60 year old community tradition that began with a couple of families and is still a really simple affair with kids on bikes, some ATVs and other folks walking. It’s just a fun time for everybody to get together. After that I’ll head up the road to finish putting out the daily paper I also edit in an adjacent town. That night we plan to go to a fireworks show with our twin teenagers which is again less about the holiday for us and more just an excuse for some family time. Nothing really different but, other than my work time, it’s much more about being with my community and my family than celebrating anything in particular. ---

I didn’t stop enjoying the Fourth of July when Tricky Dick invaded Cambodia, or Reagan denied health care to AIDS victims, or W fabricated an unnecessary war, killing thousands for no reason. So yeah, music, friends and beer. Republicans or no Republicans. ---

We’re on vacation and yesterday drove around the historic older suburbs of Sonoma, California. We saw on several porches 4th of July bunting, but no American flags. Instead, residents had hung out California’s state flag. ---
