Of course Weird Al Yankovic has [something to say](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xo74Dn7W_pA).

> They are all over the place here (Amish Central). They’re in racks wherever they sell PA Dutch or Amish souvenirs. When I first moved down here and saw them in the rack at the diner checkout, I almost fell on the floor laughing.

But do the Amish read them?

I have to honestly say I don’t know. I’ve seen them in a lot of places the Amish just don’t shop. I’ve also seen them in Walmart, where the Amish DO shop. But I don’t know if they buy them. My instinct is that they don’t, but my instinct and $4.50 will get you a venti at Starbucks.

It must be a small world after all. Right after reading this tread, I signed up for an online writing course thru Stanford. Holly Payne is teaching it. She’s written several books about the Amish.

If the OP is interested, here are Holly’s published books.

> Follow Holly Payne and explore their bibliography from Amazon's Holly Payne Author Page.

I’m very excited to learn from an author of this depth. We’re covering character development, story boarding etc.

Inspired by a drunk driver that almost killed Holly 15 years ago. Writing the book was her own personal journey of forgiveness.

> “_ **Kingdom of Simplicity** _” is the story of Eli Yoder, a young Amish man who survives an accident that kills his five sisters. His anger at the driver - whose identity he learns only toward the end of the book - and his guilt at surviving lead him on a painful journey during his rumspringa, the period when Amish teens are allowed to experience the outside “English” world before formally joining the Amish faith. Eli can embrace it only when he learns to forgive.

> By studying three critically acclaimed and bestselling debut novels (The Book Thief, The Kite Runner, and The Art of Racing in the Rain), we will deconstruct the storytelling process and burnish our skills as craftspeople in story design, dialogue, and character development. We will also learn to use outlines, story “boards,” and character arcs — three necessary and helpful tools of the trade.
