Among the many reasons I hate GMail

Hmm, i can’t stand thunderbird. I can’t find anything in it.

I’ve been trying to discourage my friends from using my Gmail account, because I’m afraid it’s about to break. As in, i won’t be able to read it from my phone.

But i hadn’t realized that I’m also not going to be able to read it on my aging mac. This is actually a rather serious problem, as people tend to assume I’ll get stuff they send to my Gmail.

(i use k9 on my phone, Mac Mail from a really old Mac operating system on my Mac, Mailbox on one PC, the and Thunderbird on the other PC. But I’m serious about finding Thunderbird really hard to use. I basically never use that PC for email, because i can’t find anything. The Mac has my decades of email history.)

As far as I know, Google isn’t saying that app-specific passwords are going away. Instructions on using them:

They still recommend “Sign in with Google”, but your old programs should work with this method.

I’m okay creating app passwords, if that will work. Currently, the “app passwords” for my Gmail are just the Gmail password. But the mail system i use for my primary email (fastmail) has made me set up an app password for each client that reads it for several years, and while it’s a bit of a nuisance, I’ve gotten used to it.

I hope that works.

This thread alarms me, because I only have a faint idea of what anybody is talking about here, and I can’t tell if it’s going to affect me.

I use Google to send and receive e-mail. I don’t use any other google apps. I only use gmail via their regular web interface. My machine is an aging MacBook, and my browsers are Safari and Firefox, both fairly old. Are these going to be affected?

Nothing here affects their web interface, on any platform. Occasionally, Google makes changes that require having a somewhat up to date browser, but you’d have to be on something really ancient for that to matter. The only question here is how third-party apps behave, like Thunderbird.

Okay, thanks.

Thanks. I created an app password for K9, and I’m getting my email again. It has just stopped showing up without any obvious reason (and continued to work in Nine) and i hadn’t realized the connection.

It was a problem, because people assumed I’d seen mail they sent to my Gmail account.

I appreciate your putting me on the right track. I’ll probably need to create app passwords for nine and for my Mac, as well, but that’s just a minor nuisance, now that i know that will work.

It’s working for me in K9, which is ancient and barely supported.

Upgrading to two factor authentication is a good idea, anyway. I didn’t need to do that today, as i already had. Now that my email client has a shiny new app password, all is well.
