Ooof. I got that Batman horror story drilled into my head hardcore when I worked at Six Flags.
See anybody on the wrong side of the fence then you “ESTOP IT NOW” and worry about possible damage to the ride and getting the passengers off later.
The large ride I was responsible for was a bobsled, with pretty loose restraints (meant for 2 people front to back, but people were allowed to go singly). Heavy duty rachet system that could be released by station brakes or a key in case of breakdown. Only time I ever had people stand up on it was coming back into the station - I think the fact that the bars weren’t tight and the cars were swaying on their own accord helped convince people to stay seated.
The computerized safety system on the ride was pretty good, though had false positives a bit more than I’d like. It could be a real pain when you knew that the ride was clear, but the computer stopped a car out at an intermediate brake station, especially if you didn’t restart it in time (10 seconds?) because you were busy dealing with loading. That meant somebody got to go run and climb 3 stories worth of ladders to the brake station to acknowledge the start. Fun stuff.
