An African state gets it first White leader since de Klerk

Cite?

Zambia is doing fairly well by Sub-Saharan African standards. He seems fairly popular and the locals seem to, you know, want a guy whose actually competent running things.

Kindergarten? 1st or 2nd grade? Somewhere in there probably.

Touché.

…and Zambia has now inaugurated a new leader Edgar Lungu.

Is he going to keep Scott around?

I’m not sure on what role Scott will play in Lungu’s administration, however there was a battle fought recently between the two men on who should be their party’s president.

In November Scott (who was successor to the late President Sata) removed Lungu as PF Secretary General (who’s successor to Scott), but reversed that order a day later due to widespread protests. Scott also tried to convince a chief judge to block Lungu’s presidential nomination until the PF’s party straightened out exactly who was party president; Lungu sent another letter telling the judge to ignore Scott’s.

This drama was all wrapped up in controversy as Scott is president, but only “acting president.” Scott cannot stand for elections (It’s against their constitution) so he will soon be replaced (only a matter of time); Lungu will (most likely) be the man to replace Scott as president (which he did). However, Lungu was only the party’s SG while Scott was the party’s VP.

Controversy Lungu only narrowly won the current elections, and (to add more irrelevancy towards Lungu) his presidency will only last until 2016 (Lungu only is allowed to live out Sata’s old term until a new election).

And I thought Detroit getting a white mayor was weird.

Edgar Lungu has officially dropped Guy Scott as VP in favour of Inonge Wina, who now becomes Zambia’s first female vice president.
