The only way I can do it is to connect sixes together – that is, to make curlicues through the air.
I can draw a counterclockwise circle while rotating my foot clockwise, no problem. It’s weird that adding in the inward-facing spiral of a six to the counterclockwise circle messes things up.
Here’s my favorite exercise like this, taught to me by a kid from Korea when I was 12:
Sitting down, make a fist with your left hand, and begin bouncing it lightly on your left leg. Place your right hand on your right leg and stroke it back and forth (yeah, yeah, boom chicka wow wow).
That’s not so hard. Now, switch – stroke your left leg with your left hand, and bounce your right fist on your right leg. THAT’s hard.
I seem to be able to do all of those exercises without any trouble. I must be exceptionally coordinated. As for you drummers (or anyone else that wants to try), try tapping polyrhythms; for instance, with your left hand tap a 4 count (1…2…3…4) and with your right hand tap a 3 count (1…2…3), where your “1” count for each hand hits at the same time. Great practice for limb interdependance.
I can do the foot circle thing, but I have to concentrate, I tried it and juist let it go and it went countercloskwise. The hand thing is damn easy, I had no trouble. Are you sure it’s suppossed to be hard? I can’t imagine how it is, I mean, just make the wrists go different ways (it was actually harder to get them to go the SAME direction…maybe the same direction is actually opposite?)
I can also pat my head while rubbing my belly, and visa versa, with either hand doing either part without having to stop and think. I just start a goin’!
