An escalator/peer pressure poll

Some oddly placed conviction in this thread.

Generally, I tend to walk, so if I’m standing, it’s usually for a fair reason and pretty obvious. If it’s one of those reasons, I’ll stay put, otherwise I’ll walk. Not that big of a deal.

Hari Seldon - this is WAY out of line for IMHO. You’ve been here for over a decade and should know this.

Hrhomer, telling a poster to go fuck themselves is out of line in every forum on this board, even if it’s backhandedly.

The funniest thing is that’s such a stupider-than-fuck hypothetical by someone who’s apparently paranoid and fairly delusional. Has anyone ever been yelled at on an escalator before for not walking? Like, ever? The answer to this is no. If someone is standing still, everyone just deals with it. Yeah, IF a friend and I were walking on the sidewalk and someone moving quickly approached us and started shrieking at us, I’d flip him the bird. This is an “if” that has never happened, and never, I can guarantee you, will. But in the real world, when someone behind me is moving fast and I’m blocking their way, I move.

Woah Gukumatz, I thought you stopped moderating because you haven’t been very active.

For heaven’s sake.

I’m the one walking up any escalator, so the situation isn’t likely to arise. But if someone in front of me isn’t walking, and I am in such a tearing hurry that I can’t wait half a minute to get to the top, I’m taking the stairs anyway.

And if I am standing still, there is a good reason for it. I see no reason to assume the person in front of me doesn’t have an equally good reason.

Besides, it’s self-limiting. The guy behind who is all stressed out because of the extra thirty seconds he has to stand still is going to have a heart attack sooner or later because he can’t manage his stress. So patience will pay off again, as it often does.

Shodan

The advent of escalators did not occur because anyone was concerned with my arrival up ( or down ) a flight of stairs taking less time. The escalator is there to make my arrival leisurely. And I use them at my leisure.
I don’t block the damn thing, so anyone who’d like to arrive faster can certainly do so.

Edit: Single wide?? How close to the stairs?

Thanks! I spend a lot of time these days in metro stations dodging the power commuters while trying not to puke. Always embarrassing in the AM, as I’m certain everyone must think I’m terribly hung over.

In the OP’s situation, I would continue to stand. It doesn’t sound like there’s any emergency and it’s probably just a mall so there aren’t huge masses of people trying to get to work and being slowed down.

If it’s a high traffic area, hopefully the escalator is at least double wide and I can stand right. My balance is not so hot, especially on a moving surface like an escalator, and I’d rather not fall and hurt myself and others nearby. I’m not super old and don’t have a cane, so it’s probably not evident just by looking at me that I have balance issues.

Sometimes society has to make concessions for people who are slower or not in sync with the rest of society for whatever reason, be it a physical disability or carrying a heavy bag, toting a child, whatever. A little consideration on both sides would be nice.

I’ve never lived in an area with a subway that would require an escalator to move lots of hurrying people.
