An extended warranty actually paid off!

I just posted this today on a thread about SquareTrade warranties:

I just filed a claim this morning with SquareTrade for a refurbished iPod Touch my daughter got a year and a half ago. The battery won’t hold a charge. They’ve determined it’s cheaper to just refund the full iPod purchase price, and are sending a free mailer for us to send in the iPod (to make sure it wasn’t dropped or otherwise damaged). I can’t complain, and my daughter’s delighted.

They are always sending out discount codes for their warranties. I just bought an upgraded 3-year warranty for a new camera, which INCLUDES accidental damage from dropping or spills, for $26.

We’ve gotten extended warranties on 2 used vehicles. Both have saved us a fortune on transmission and engine work. I wouldn’t do it for a new car, though.

I have a third-party warranty, but the went ahead an honored it.

You got lucky, becuase the warranty company will probably soon be out of business.

This is way these companies tend to operate: when they start up, they sell lots and lots of warranty plans to dealerships that are competitively priced. They pay the first handful of claims that come in, and then they fold up.

IAfter recovering from that shock, it occurred to me that I might have actually bought an extended warranty for the car, which was used when I bought it. I pulled out my purchase contract (one of the few important documents I’ve actually kept track of in my life) and discovered that yes, I’d bought a two-year warranty (I’ve had the car just over a year) at the highest coverage possible (“platinum”) that basically covers just about anything and everything. .

How much did you pay for the warranty?
