An unordered package arrives at your door. Would you open it?

No I never open my door for any reason.

Lets say that it is addressed to you, but you don’t recognize the name of the sender.

I had the same thing happen, only it was a big cooler of frozen filet mignon. Looked for the name on the box to no avail. Split them with my neighbor.

I got an unordered package just last week, addressed to me. And indeed it was for me, it was an unexpected gift.

I’ve seen your username for a while now and I just now get it. D’oh!

As long as it was addressed to me, sure. I order things on eBay and from Amazon merchants on a regular basis, so there are a lot of times I wouldn’t recognize the name of the sender given the return address would have their real name and they don’t necessarily use their given name on either website.

I would and I have and I’m still here; so it must not be that big a risk. All of mine were delivered and professionally wrapped/sealed. Now just drop a box with the flaps folded closed and I may call in the experts (police) before getting too curious about it.

Me too :smack:

Even if it’s completely unlabeled, it’s far more likely that a friend of mine found something they thought I would like and dropped it off as an unexpected gift without bothering to write anything on it than that someone decided to leave a bomb on my porch. I have many friends and no enemies that I know of. If that’s not the case with you, you’re making much more interesting life choices than I ever have!

This happened once at my former workplace - mysterious package, no valid return address, not even addressed to us. It turned out to be a(n apparently) solid 12" square of marijuana. Even in California, that could be worth serious money! There were several employee offers to “take it off our hands” or “get some money for it,” but ultimately we turned it over to the police.

My secret is out!

Is it ticking?

No, but it is heavy.

Shit ! What if you’re hard of hearing like me , I wouldn’t hear it ticking !!! I would have second thought about opening it and would ask my neighbors if were expecting a package or if they seen who left it .

In the entire history of everything, has anyone ever actually left a bomb (and do you really think bombs still tick? Where would an amateur bomb-maker even

  • find* a mechanical timer these days?) on someone’s doorstep? Delivered by mail, sure. (And you * open* your mail, right? How reckless!) Burning bags of dog shit, maybe. But a bomb? Ever?

The worst it’s likely to be (as happened to Azile) is drugs, and you’d probably be safer turning those over to police than throwing them away. Good luck getting the police to come over a box you haven’t even bothered to open, though!

Far, far more likely is that you’re panicking because a neighbor baked an extra loaf of zucchini bread and put it in a box for you. It’s almost zucchini season, right? They’re probably trying to get rid of all the ones from last year before they have to deal with more!

:frowning: Tell it to Kathy Sheets.

[spoiler]“As she pulled her red Audi into the garage, she saw a package halfway on to the wooden catwalk that led to the main house. […] She parked the car and walked around to pick it up.
She had just enough time to tuck it under her arm before it exploded.”

To be fair, I think the chances of an anonymous parcel being hazardous to life and limb are very, very tiny. On the other hand, if I was asked to sign for a package I didn’t recognize, I would be wary of being framed for something.

In Indiana, any unordered merchandise you get may be regarded as a gift.

However, in an old Abbie Hoffman book, or maybe The Anarchist Cookbook, in a section about dealing drugs, it was suggested that unopened parcels you think may be illegal should remain closed for a week or two. That way, if the police, tracking the package, raid your place, they can’t claim you knew what it was. Looking back from 2017, that theory doesn’t seem so solid.

I wouldn’t even know if it were unordered. We order so much stuff from various online stores that there are packages arriving all the time and we forget what’s in them until we open them.

I did recently get a package to my address, but to the name of someone who doesn’t live here. It was a large box marked “perishable” and was from a company that sells a meat subscription over the internet. I opened it (to see how frozen it was and how much ice was in it) and emailed them to say that they had a few hours to pick it up or it was going in my freezer. They told me to keep it.

A few weeks later I got a package to that same person, but this time it was mis-delivered. Her address is my address with two digits transposed. So walked it over to her house. Thanks for the meat, typoing neighbor!

I have, twice, in the past few years. Didn’t notice that they weren’t addressed to me because I am an Amazon queen. One was a kids’ book from Amazon, and the other was a rather well-worn baby quilt that was apparently ordered from eBay. I did try to do something about the latter, but the seller never wrote me back, so it ended up in the linen rotation.

I get a bunch of magazines and catalogs from people who lived here before me, too. Not too worried about that.

How do you leave your house? Through the window?
