Actually, _The Simpsons_ gets away with a lot more than you’d think. They’ve mentioned golden showers once, a reference to “lemon parties” (look it up) and then there was the feed store named “Sneed’s Feed and Seed (Formerly Chuck’s)”. ---

Yeah, we’ve been watching \*Raising Hope \*with the kids, and there have been a couple memorable moments. Maw Maw, on seeing a silicone-cased smartphone vibrating on the nightstand: “In my day, they looked more like penises!” Maw Maw: “Well, I found out I can only have an orgasm if I’m being choked.” :eek: But, ultimately I decided to let the kids keep watching. I watched _Three’s Company_ and Mel Brooks movies and stuff as a kid, and it all sailed over my head. I’ll grant it’s more explicit and less innuendo these days, though. ---

But it’s still wildly inappropriate for children. In some ways, moreso. Max and Caroline, despite the raunch and sarcasm, are actually hard working women trying to make their lives better through their own efforts. They support each other, and genuinely care for each other. They’re both in touch with their sexual needs and not afraid to take care of them on their own when they don’t have a partner. When they do have relationships, it’s with interesting, sweet, employed men who treat them right - or it’s a very short lived relationship because they’re strong enough to cut it off and willing to stand up for themselves - sometimes with the encouragement of the other. Those are actually very admirable traits to me, things I would like my daughter to see and emulate…except for the raunch. And Olaf. Two and a Half Men isn’t as raunchy (quite) and uses more innuendo, but it hits all the notes of how I don’t want my daughter to see women treated or living herself. Every character is more loathsome than the next, and that includes all the women. The housekeeper is lazy, the neighbor/love interest is an insane stalker, Alan’s ex is a frigid manipulating bitch, Alan and Charlie’s mom is cold and uncaring, and her sexuality is seen as a negative thing, and Charlie’s "girls’ are a string of floozies with more depth to their cleavage than their mind. (Things got a little better with the introduction of Walden, but now they seem to have upped the raunch to keep the funny.) And when I say it’s not quite as raunchy…it’s still pretty raunchy. Cleverer, but raunchy. Here’s just the first example I googled; there have been worse. (Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s actually generally hilarious, and I watch it when she’s not around.) Charlie: What’re you doing? Alan: Me? Uh, uh nothing. Just uh, nothing. Charlie: You were surfing for porn weren’t you? Alan: Uh, yes. Okay that’s what I was doing… you caught me, I am so embarrassed. Charlie: Well you should be, it’s disgusting. C’mon, let’s see what puts a chubby in your cino. [grabs laptop] Alan: No no, it’s personal. Charlie: Ooh what are you into? Grannies with trannies? Chickens with strap-ons? Alan: Please don’t. Charlie: [looks at laptop] Oh you pitiful freak. What is wrong with you? Alan: Nothing, I came upon it by accident. Charlie: I am so ashamed, my own brother, using an… Internet dating service. Alan: I’m a man Charlie, I have needs. The biggest risk isn’t that she’ll “get it”. The risk is that she won’t, and she’ll ask me what it means. There are some conversations I can’t figure out how to make appropriate for an 8 year old, and the finer categories of internet pornography is one of them. Charlie’s attitudes towards and treatment of women is about 102 of them. We watch a lot of Cosby Show reruns instead. 😃 ---

Well, it wasn’t prime time, but you can make an argument that the “fingerprints” joke on [the Animaniacs](http://www.cracked.com/article_18672_the-6-creepiest-things-ever-slipped-into-childrens-cartoons.html) was an anal joke, too. Supposedly, [this is a dick joke on the Flintstones](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yC2D14fBtow) (so primetime), but I’m not entirely sure I’m convinced it is. ---
