They don’t. The cycle repeats about every 18 years, 11 days, 8.3 hours. Which means about 8000 miles west of where it occurred 18 years ago. I saw an eclipse in Norfork, VA, in 1970. That same eclipse was in Texas three cycles later in 2024.
