I wasn’t going to reply to this thread, but the curiosity is killing me. Bedboy4, I just want to know: Why are you here? You obviously don’t like any of the regulars. None of the regulars seem to like you. Yet, you still come here, spending internet time that could be put to use communicating with people you have something in common with. The obvious answer is that you’re trolling, but I’m willing to listen to any other reasons you might be willing to put forth. Are you seriously trying to contribute to an otherwise fun site, in some beligerant way? Or do you just get your rocks off by trying to piss people off, simply because you can do so anonymously? If the truth be known…i’m pissed right fucking off the way I was attacked when I mentioned how I hated quotes being over-used in posts…I don’t appreciate that kind of shit thrown on me for stating a simple fact …I might not have a thousand posts under my belt…but its not cool to dump on me for stating something that I’m sure alot of others would agree about,only reason they fear is because your instantly accused of being some kind of fucking punk and driven off…not cool man ---

OK, for anyone who (like me) wasn’t familiar with the thread bedboy4 is referring to, it’s here: [http://boards.straightdope.com/ubb/Forum4/HTML/006560.html](http://boards.straightdope.com/ubb/Forum4/HTML/006560.html) Now then, bb4, I’ve read through the thread. Yes, you were attacked. But I’d like to point out a couple things. First of all, you posted a topic in MPSIMS that belongs in the Pit, or at least in ATMB. (The way you started it says “Pit” to me.) Secondly, the members on this board (unlike most other boards) _never_ respect a person who refuses to spell correctly on a regular basis. Punctuation mistakes also grate on a lot of nerves. The environment on this board prefers people who can _and do_ communicate on a very literate level. Intelligence is highly regarded around here, and poor communication skills is a flag (justifiably or not) of a lack of that trait. I, for one, think you can do better. Thirdly, the follow up tantrums makes matters worse. Once again, that stuff belongs in the Pit. Fourthly, (and most importantly) you came in with very few posts and started telling people how to behave. Now, I know it’s irritating when your opinions are shot down, simply because you’re new, but let’s look at this in a more objective way. Suppose you and a bunch of your friends frequent a local restaurant. Let’s say you’ve been going there a year. After awhile, you become friendly with the waitresses, sit for hours just drinking your coke and shooting the shit, and other things that you feel comfortable doing. Why? Because it’s your territory. You know the people, and you know how things work there. Now, let’s say some new person comes in. He comes in regularly, but he’s only been around for a week. One day he comes over to the table and tells you that you should treat the waitresses more courteously. Call them ma’am and don’t take up so much of their time just having a coke or two. Wouldn’t you be offended by this guy who comes onto your turf and tells you how to act? What does he know? The waitresses have never complained. They even seem to like you. Now then, what do you say we let the old stuff go. Try to get a feel for how things are here, instead of how you would like them to be. Don’t try to redecorate. If you like it, stay and make yourself comfortable. If you don’t then go somewhere else. It’s that easy. This place isn’t going to change to suit your desires, at least not until you’ve been here long enough to be thought of as someone who’s opinion matters. That may not seem fair when you’re on the “new” end of the stick, but try to look at it from the other side, too. ---

Mr.KnowitAll…thats all cool with me, and I don’t appreciate the fact that people think I’m some ignorant loser who can’t spell…I read 2-3 books a week…So if some cocksucking ignorant doper wants to challenge me to a spelling contest or a witicism contest, power to the loser…I’m not talking about myself here, I’ve been reading this BBS for over a year and a half, and I find the condesension here totally rude and ignorant, You’d think The Straight Dope would encourage new membership, but it all sounds Old Boys Club to me, an that just reeks. I know it can seem like an Old Boys Club, but I’d like to point out that there is fresh blood showing up here all the time. **Swimmingriddles** and **SingleDad** come to mind right off the bat. Still, they didn’t come in and start telling people what to do. But it’s more than that. We (and that includes you, should you want it to) have a community of people who can have intelligent discussions. We are more than happy to chase off people who demonstrate that horrible combination of ignorance and arrogance. Sometimes we get a little too gung-ho about chasing off undesirables, shooting first and asking questions later. That doesn’t prevent people from hanging around and eventually fitting in. Admittedly, it’s a bit of an exclusive club, but anyone who wants to can enter the door. They’re also free to leave if they don’t like the company. The result is this eclectic group that have at least a mutual admiration, and in some cases friendships (or more!). I understand where you’re coming from, bb. And certainly, no one is asking you to not be yourself. Just try to let the other members be themselves as well. (BTW: The spelling is much better. Now try to work on that punctuation. ;)) ---

I registered here in December of 1999, posting once to answer a question. I then stayed quiet until January, reading and learning how things worked. Not once did I get flamed for being a newbie. This does deal with something I have [brought up in the past.](http://boards.straightdope.com/ubb/Forum4/HTML/006144.html) bedboy seems to me to be walking the razor thin line between being a troll and being a newby who is learning how to fit in. Remember, it can be easy to " jump right into the fray" as it were, without realizing that you don’t quite undersatand the dynamic of how the fray works. I always try not to automaticly equate enthusiasm( often misplaced) for ignorance. Lets give him a chance to learn the proper forums, and hopefully we’ll have another good poster, not like that awful Bricker! 🙂 🙂 Hey! Post 300 a call for peace and love! WOW! **Bedboy,** I think part of the problem here is inconsistency and tantrums. Some of your posts are actually fairly interesting, but then you go and do something dumb like post a huge, bandwidth-hogging, presumably copyrighted picture of a naked female centaur, and we just don’t know what to think. **Are** you a troll? Or did you simply want to share this nifty picture with us? We are confused. If you did honestly just want to share this nifty picture that you found, a better way to have done it would be to make the address into a link, like this [http://metalab.unc.edu/wm/paint/auth/vinci/joconde/joconde.jpg](http://metalab.unc.edu/wm/paint/auth/vinci/joconde/joconde.jpg) and say something like, “Hey, everybody, look what I found!” The other thing is, when you get mad, you tend to just sit down at the keyboard and fire off a steaming hot post using words like “cocksucking”. Nobody else does that, or at least most of us don’t. If we’re angry about something, we find a way to express that anger that doesn’t involve simply cussing people out. If for no other reason, “simply cussing people out” irritates us because it shows a lack of imagination on your part. Well, as you can see, I am very new here. I have not had any problems being treated bad by the long time members. Maybe this is due to the fact that I do not purposely try to anger other people. This is not to say that I have not state my opinion, as I did in a gun control thread in the Pit. It just means that I try to do it in a way that is respectful. Bed, I think you should calm down before you start to post. IMHO, this would lead to more interesting and less inflammatory posts. I may not agree with everyone, but I do respect other people’s opinions. * * * What matters most is how you see yourself.
