My mom had help from her mother and sisters and cooked for 13 of us. Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, squash, gravy, salad, deviled eggs, jello, cranberry sauce, pear bread, pumpkin bread and spiced apple slices. We ate at 1 then had pies at 6, apple, rhubarb, pumpkin and tollhouse.

Yes, I’m stuffed.

Zette had no help preparing for her thirteen guests 🙂
Turkey
Garlic Mashed potatoes
Sweet Potatoes
Acorn Squash
Homemade Cranberry Relish (someone made this for me)
Dinner Rolls
Homemade Gravy

## Verdict: Everyone loved the Garlic potatoes, the gravy was awesome and the stuffing was great, too. Nothing burned, not even the rolls 🙂 Zette

Mr. Rilch wanted me to put the giblets in the gravy, but I could only find the neck. Then, when our friend was carving, he found the giblets behind the wings. Oh well; next time, I’ll know.

Besides the turkey (which, for the first time in years, was done in time to eat with the rest of dinner), we had:
Ham, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, stuffing, fruit salad, jello (plain and with fruit cocktail), corn, mixed vegetables (corn, peas, beans, carrots), Rice Krispie treats, cheese, sausage & crackers, apple pie, pumpkin pie, cherry pie, more apple pie, more pumpkin pie (we had 8 or 9 pies\*) and cherry cheesecake.

\*It was so funny, we started with 4, and then everyone showed up with pie.

This was the year of the pie; my mother baked 8 of them. 2 pecan, 2 sweet potato, 2 pumpkin, 2 Derby pies, because you gotta have chocolate. Mostly for 4 people.

I don’t want to see anything with a crust on it for at least a month.

A 25 pound turkey. I’m sneaking handfuls of meat to all the dogs and cats when people don’t see me, now even the animals are belching and saying “no thanks!” Even the cat that loves turkey so much he tried to climb in the pan with the raw bird when we were preparing it for the oven.

Sides dishes and then some:

Old family recipe for country style pate that we only make during the holiday season.

Old family recipe for stuffing that we only make during the holiday season.

Mashed potatoes, butternut squash, deviled eggs, peas, candied sweet potatoes, Waldorf salad, cranberry sauce . . . homemade crescent rolls . . .and, of course, giblet gravy. (Straws were optional.)

Took about 12 hours to cook and 4 hours to clean up.

I’m having pasta with red sauce tonight.

Two kinds of stuffing: wild rice with hazelnuts, and bread with Italian sausage. Roast acorn squash daubed with hoisin sauce and ginger. Roasted red and Yukon gold potatoes with rosemary. Sweet potatoes with brown sugar and sherry. A roasted vegetable medley which included golden beets, turnips, brussels sprouts, all tossed with shallots, garlic, and hazelnuts. A cranberry compote. Gravy with shiitake and cremini mushrooms.

The turkey itself was lovingly massaged 24 hours in advance of the oven with a mixture of Dijon mustard, olive oil, lemon juice and lemon zest, parsley, and sage.

An apple/pear pie with dried cranberries and little dinosaurs cut into the crust to charm the chillun. A sour cherry pie. An apple cake.

Morbier, Blue Shropshire, and an Irish cheddar afterward.

Somebody else brought the wine. It doesn’t bear comment.

Sorry to come in so late with this; I’m only back in my office today. But it was a lot of work (my wife and I did it all, to feed 22 people) and I needed to brag.

Unk, you SHOULD have! God knows, there was enough.

And you would have made an excellent confederate for sneaking out of the house to Al’s for Italian beef sandwiches.

Ayesha, my copy of THE FOOD LOVER’S COMPANION lists “stuffing” and “dressing” as interchangable terms, but doesn’t go into the etymology. At what point south of the Mason-Dixon line, or west of ther Mississippi, does stuffing become dressing, do you think? (TubaDiva called it stuffing, and she’s in Georgia.)

Uke,
I’m not sure, since most of my family comes from Georgia, Tennesse, and east Texas, I think I’m as southern as you can get.

BTW it’s pronounced - dressin.

I swear, some people talk funny.
