Alanis Morissette’s [You Oughta Know](https://www.last.fm/music/Alanis+Morissette/_/You+Oughta+Know/+lyrics) surprised me the first time I heard the unedited version, after hearing it only on FM radio. Finally the rage made sense.

Or are we talking about ironic uses of the F-word?

Well yeah, but that song’s Grammy eligibility was like, 50 years ago …

I was more impressed with the incorporation of the word into clever, humorous lyrics, just because I’ve grown a bit weary of artists who throw it in for no real reason except that they _can_, and they’re trying to be “edgy” and rebellious. But your point is valid, which is why I love this Alestorm song:

[Fucked With An Anchor](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=th4Czv1j3F8)

Alestorm hasn’t used any profanity at all in any other song of theirs I’ve heard, so it’s completely overboard use in that song was extra funny. And I think they were poking some fun at other bands who over-rely on the word.

Good lord, where did my words go? I meant to say “that is the best continuous use of a non-gratuitous F-bomb.” That word just makes the song, and it is brilliant.

(We were also sure The Raiders’ version had the lyric “I want to shit out, now”.)

Country Joe and The Fish had the “Fish” cheer long before any of these listed. Best use of an intro to a song using the F-word

Give me an F
Give me a U
Give me a C
Give me a K

Another one that comes to mind to me – and this is for a single use of the word “fuck” in a song – is Chrissie Hyndes “fuck off” “But not me, baby, I’m too precious/[I had to] Fuck off!”

I think it’s important to understand the history of the word, so perhaps there should also be a Grammy for the Best Use of the F-Word in a Spoken Word or Non-Musical album.

I like the way R.E.M. dropped a few quiet, subtle f-bombs in songs like _Ignoreland_ and _What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?_ Even in _Star Me Kitten_ the word doesn’t jump out at you.
