I do not wear a mask of any kind, I am not a horse, and I have never hit anyone over the head with a guitar, although the temptation to do so has occasionally been strong. I’ve never been Pitted; Pitting would be too good for the likes of me. But I really can’t help wondering if the path to fame (if not popularity) is to be more aggressive and strident (or, if you prefer, decisive and confident). I’ll admit it’s not a completely new idea; who was who said, speaking of press coverage, “I don’t care what you say about me, just as long as you spell my name right”? And the more I see of the world, the more I think that to make something worthy of being admired, you have to risk it being loathed. And so where does the popularity of this thread enter into that idea. Apparently there are quite a number of people who don’t feel they’ve made a terribly strong impression here. I recognize almost all the names, but I can’t associate identities to many of them. My own particular quirk is that I usually can’t remember details about peope here who are household names around here, with 10,000 or more posts; but I can remember almost anyone I’ve met in person for more than a couple minutes. ---

Hi, I’m **Dasgupta**. Why did I pick that name? Good question. It was the last name of the author of a white paper I was reading at the time. Hey, I couldn’t come up with anything else witty, so it stuck. I’m a male New Yorker, and director of IT for a fashion staffing firm. I’m going to Las Vegas shortly and going to propose to my lovely girlfriend, so look for that thread soon. Basically, I’m a lurker. Was before I joined, still am. Hi, I’m FatBaldGuy. I used to be [Fat Bald Guy](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=311209) but I talked TubaDiva into helping me get less spaced out. I also recognize most of the posters on this thread, but not all of them. I’m the kind of poster who will generally post a response to a question if I think I have anything to contribute, but sometimes I just can’t help throwing in some drive-by sarcasm. I probably need to work on that. I’m a systems analyst/programmer who has been writing code since approximately the same time that dirt was invented. I’ve never been to a dopefest or met any other dopers IRL (AFAIK), but it might be fun sometime. ---

I’m **av8rmike** , but on LiveJournal I’m known as **av8rmike**. I am a pilot, and still occasionally answer aviation questions in GQ, when I can get in before **Broomstick**. 😛 It’s not my real-life job, though, and I haven’t logged an hour in months.
