don’t hate me for this, Dominos Pizza used to have the best bread bowl meals. They were awesome. Then they quit selling them. Must have been because their pizza tasted and still tastes like crap after they “improved” it many years ago and was being out sold by the bread bowls (chicken fettuccine inna bread bowl…drooly emoticon…)

Domino’s is still selling chicken Alfredo bread bowls where I live. Check with your local one again, Domino’s stopped the bread bowls but has since restarted them. They are vastly better than the pizza, agreed.

Well, I told you I was recently impressed with it… and I have to admit it’s nowhere near the hottest. It was that… well… that flavor. That flavor was new to me and it just grabbed me. Sure, I’ll probably regret it tomorrow ( not as much as those hotter peppers though… but it’s going to be Monday and Mondays are painful enough ).

So, thumbs down on the small loaf idea then? You could kick up the heat on your plate as much as you wanted… but I thought “medium” is a good place to start with friends.

I’ll have to check with the local shop to see if they’re selling them again.

A local sports bar used to offer beef stew in a bread bowl on Super Bowl Sundays. Your ticket, which you had purchased previously, or on the door, allowed you to hit the buffet as much as you liked. As I recall, there were also salads, relish trays, and whatnot to accompany your meal. And you could eat the bowl when you had finished your stew.

Y’know, it occurs to me that all edible bowls suffer from the same problem. You have to put it on something clean enough to eat off of, and so you effectively still need some sort of dish. Even though restaurants clean off tables between customers, I still wouldn’t want to eat directly off of a restaurant table. The bottom of my plate is in contact with the table, but I don’t care, because I’m not eating the bottom of my plate. And once you’ve already got crockery, what’s the point of the bread bowl?

Because the bowl tastes so good soaked with the liquid from whatever you filled it with. My favorite part of a Tostada Grande, taco salad or whatever you call it is breaking apart the tortilla and crunching on it while I finish whatever it was stuffed with.

I used to make edible bowls by baking bread dough on the undersides of small pie pans - it’s one of those things that seems like an amazing idea in theory, but is less than great in practice. If you have soup or stew in your bread bowl, you can’t eat the bread with it - you have to finish the contents, then eat the bread - it’s nicer just to have a bread roll alongside a non-edible bowl of soup.

And you can eat the bowl!

Technically, you can eat anything so long as you process it enough first. You will die though, eventually, either because of what you ate, or your constitution, or just because everyone dies in the end.

I feel like that could be some kind of disclaimer that would be useful to no one.

When I’ve done the clam chowder in sourdough thing it is normally served on paper. Just enough to protect the bowl from whatever you set it on.

Also when I’ve done the chowder/sourdough thing they’ve served the top piece of bread along with the bowl. You know the piece they had to cut out ot make the bowl and its normally been toasted and buttered. So you get bread with your soup and then bread drenched in soup afterwards. It really is my favorite way to eat clam chowder.

I have a vague recollection of an old movie in which a guy invented an edible beer bottle. It’s a minor part of the movie. I was thinking it was _It Happens Every Spring_, but I can’t find anything that verifies this.

Personally, I don’t think it’s possible to create an edible beer bottle that anyone would want to eat. Still, it’s a brilliant concept. Drink as much beer as you want with no lasting evidence of your consumption.

To each their own - I prefer the soup-drenched bread to be the middle part - and finish with soup to ‘wash down’ the bread, but maybe that’s just me.

To the same extent that a steak and ale pie is a stew in an edible dish…

They’re ok too. Just felt the need to be specific about the pineapple.

That’s a line from “The Candy Man” as sung by Sammy Davis Jr.

I haven’t been out lately but Tim Horton’s used to have a soup in a bread bowl that was a good hearty meal.

It’s also my favorite way to eat clam chowder but to some extent I agree with you. I generally don’t try and eat the entire bowl. I’ll eat the top and then pinch off chunks of the rim as I work my way down. Trying to eat the entire bowl can be a real mess.
