Memory melodies in Cats, imho:
-Memory
-Billy McCaw (London version only)
-Skimbleshanks
-Jellicle Songs
-Old Deuteronomy
-Mr. Mistoffelese
in fact, the only melodies in Cats that really don’t do much for me are:
-Bustopher Jones
-Mungojerrie and Rumpleteaser
-Rum Tum Tugger
-The Moments of Happiness
I took a theater appreciation class in college. We watched one musical number from Cats. I forget which one. I am absolutely not exaggerating when I say it made me physically ill.
Which really must have sucked, what with your sleeplessness because of that pea underneath all those mattresses.
And what kind of theater appreciation class would show an excerpt from Cats? With Sondheim, Cole Porter, Rogers and Hammerstein and Hart, Lerner and Loewe, Kander and Ebb to choose from, and your prof showed that dreck? Oy!
Well, they probably showed other stuff. I admit my attendence was… well, less than perfect. I had to miss a lot of class to due to pea-related lower back pain.
We did watch part of Oklahoma, which was pretty neat.
I’m way late to this thread, but for those of you who don’t like ALW, you have to go see “Spamalot.” I caught a pre-broadway show in Chicago last month and they absolutely skewer ALW with a song entitled “The Song That Goes Like This.” The entire song is pretty much ripping on him. I won’t spoil it for you, but any ALW haters who catch this show will love this song.
Oh, I’m so jealous! I desperately want to get out to see “Spamalot” before the original cast leaves the show, but the college student in Oregon is having some difficulty with funds and, er, sensibility. I’ll be on the lookout for the soundtrack, though!
