An appeal to relevant authority is always in order. However, to say that X must be correct because it was said by a scientist/professor/what-have-you is false.
Cecil has been established as a reliable authority, for the most part, but he is still continually challenged. I think he’s not the best example, though, since we all know he’s the font of all that is Right and True, and is infallible. But unless an authority is established as an authority, one can hardly use him to bolster one’s argument.
Argument from Authority is invalid when the “authority” really isn’t an authority. Your doctor is a legitimate authority to cite in a thread about STDs. But he has no more authority than any other mope in a thread about Astrophysics. Likewise, the fact that a person has a PhD in Physics does not make them an authority on dangerous dogs. Legitimate authorities would be animal trainers.
