The trunk is 18" wide and 36" across. He wouldn’t fit in there because of his legs (height), not his weight (80lbs). Remember, he could not stand during the seizures, he had to be on his side. I would have been closing the trunk lid on his legs.

I suppose in hindsight I possibly could have rigged something to keep the trunk lid open (I don’t own any bungee cords, not sure about rope) enough to accomodate him, but I didn’t think of it at the time and it’s moot anyway: no car seats.

My 7 year old I wouldn’t have worried about too much, but the 3 year old definetely has to have his, without question.

That’s a shame. It’s hard to go through life with no self respect.

**Foie** , my sympathies about your dog. You were in a tough situation, and you did the best you could in it. Don’t beat yourself up over it, but more than that, don’t let the assholes in this thread beat you up over it, either. You’re better off ignoring this thread. Posting to it is just going to give these people more of an opportunity to jump on you. Given what you’ve been through lately, I don’t think that’s something you need right now.

Oh, I didn’t see anywhere where his seizing made his legs become as straight and stiff as boards. After all, I thought he was a dog with the usual bendable legs. Silly me.

😕 Truthfully, I am not familiar with seizures and their effects on people or dogs, but when he’s seizing, do his legs not bend or fold?

When I had to take the dane in the tiny 2 seat BMW, I carried him (yes, 5’3’', out of shape, over weight me, carried my 170 lb dog to the car- it wasn’t easy), put him in, the tucked his legs so he could fit. Mind you, this is a dog that is 6 feet tall on his hind legs, but I just folded them as he would if he were laying down.

FWIW, I could have carried my dog to the car. Maybe I could have bent his legs. When he’s having seizures, all his muscles tensed and he’s got his legs kicking straight out, back arched…

What I could not do was carry him up a muddy, steep creek embankment once I had foolishly let him get into the woods behind our house.

I guess I’ll just take **Miller’s** advice. The more I second guess myself the more I actually feel like I am making excuses for what I did or did not do, and I’m sad enough about my role in all this as it is…

FTR, I love the dog very much and miss him very much.

**FoieGras** , it’s a dog. An animal.

It is not a member of your family. It’s a dog. It is, therefore, less important than you, less important than your children, and less important that your wife. Less important, in other words, than your family.

That is why you don’t waste money treating a dog when that money can be better spent on your family. A one-year old dog with epilepsy that severe is not going to make it to being a two-year old dog. So quit beating yourself up, and quit letting the idiots of the world beat you up too. You did everything one could reasonably expect.

Get another puppy and don’t worry about it.

Shodan

**FoieGras** , I was going to suggest this very thing. You’ve been through enough stress over your dog. You did the best you could. Hindsight is always 20/20. The bozos piling on you weren’t there and weren’t in your situation, and it isn’t worth letting their second-guessing stress you out. From my point of view, it’s just Recreational Outrage[sup]TM[/sup] on their part. If you and your family feel as if you did the best you could for Riley, and the circumstances were unavoidable, let the nay-sayers froth with indignation and burn this thread out. They’re not worth defending yourself to. Don’t let them make you feel worse.

For the love of all that is holy, don’t encourage someone who can’t have an animal euthanized until payday to get a puppy. Euthanasia is _way_ cheaper than the vaccinations, heartworm preventative, and flea control a puppy is going to need–if someone can’t afford to have a dog killed, they sure as hell can’t afford to take care of it alive. Even if you don’t give a shit about the dog’s welfare, those kids don’t need to watch their new puppy die of parvo.

Wait, when did we start talking about driving the dog around in the _trunk_? Good lord.

So he can do more work teaching his kids that the lower animals are so immaterial that it is ok to torture them for hours, and then just turn them loose when they get inconvenient? This man shouldn’t even have children, based on that thread.

Where else would he have gone in my car, genius? Teaching kids how to torture animals? Really?

You have not read the thread, and I have not kept my promise to stay out of this one. I’m now reminded why I will.

And, you have NO IDEA as to the loss my kids are experiencing without their former playmate, thanks though.

D-bag.

Not to mention a member of a clan that thinks it a fine idea to breed dogs and give them away as housewarming gifts to mental deficients who are unable and/or unwilling to properly care for them!

Gee whiz, I made a MISJUDGMENT! Whoda thunk a dog would possibly wander out of an unfenced yard - TWICE! 😛 Whadda maroon!

If you listen to some of these idiots, if you don’t call for a med-evac helicopter when your dog has an epileptic seizure, you are torturing animals.

Right after you post this -

And of course they all know much better than the vet who actually treated the animal what was necessary.

Please be so kind as to show me where this occurred? I’m sure you are not referring to posts 91 and 108, because your statement bears precious little resemblance to that portion of this thread. Well yeah, bonehead did say he spent hundreds in post 91. But there the resemblance ends.

Let’s take it slow so you can follow along:

> [@](#):
>
> For the love of all that is holy, don’t encourage someone who can’t have an animal euthanized until payday to get a puppy. Euthanasia is way cheaper than the vaccinations, heartworm preventative, and flea control a puppy is going to need–if someone can’t afford to have a dog killed, they sure as hell can’t afford to take care of it alive. Characterizing this as _accusing you of not vaccinating your animals_ is, at best, hyperbole.

In what universe does a statement occurring 17 posts and over 12 hours after another qualify as _right after_.

And your use of the plural _people accusing_ seems hardly accurate to describe this single poster (unless you have knowledge that I lack that **CCL** is conjoined twins!)

So yeah - other than your statement not resembling what occurred in a number of significant specifics, you are right. It _IS_ entirely accurate. :smack:

Of course, you have never been one to rely overmuch on accuracy when it didn’t support your agenda.

Regards, shithead.
