This is older than animated cartoons. as Norbert Weiner said (and Martin Gardner, in _The Annotated Alice_, quotes him) “It is impossible to describe Bertrand Russel except to say that he looks like The Mad Hatter.” Meaning, of course, John Tenniel’s illustration from the original edition of Alice. There’s a character in Miyazaki’s films who looks just like [this guy](http://www.blogcdn.com/www.tvsquad.com/media/2006/05/bob1a.jpg) from _Office Space_ for some reason. I think he appears in _Kiki’s Delivery Service_ and _Porco Rosso_. ---
