I found the NY Times article. It looks like she did say it, so I guess I was wrong. When I first read it, I thought it had the look of one of those falsely attributed email glurges that Snopes is always debunking.

It was purely her. If you’ve ever read her little hissyfits before, you’d see it’s typical Anne, with her “Dickensian principles” and her “proletariat soul”.
