A while back I saw a special on TV ( I wish I could remember the name ) that claimed that there was good evidence that the Chicago fire was actually the result of either a comet or small asteroid impact. They said that on that same night, a number of other large fires took place in that area of Illinois, and they named one small town with a totally oddball name that was wiped out by fire on that night.
Anyone else hear of this?
I saw the same show, the name of the town is Peshtigo Wisconsin and there was a large forest fire that occured the same night as the Chicago fire. The number of casualties was much greater and the area of destruction was also greater. IIRC the news of the Chicago fire went out almost immediately but Peshtigo was cut off from the outside for some time. 6,700 hits on Google about the fire.
Not to rain on the doomsayers’ parade, but where I come from, we have a word for “near-hit”:
We call it a “miss”. People like to get worked up over nothing. It’s funny that when the “doomsday freaks” that were out in force before New Year’s Eve last year told us the sky is falling, they got arrested for loitering and causing a disturbance. These doomsday freaks get government grants to do the same thing.
