My thirteen-year-old lost his identical twin a year ago, and he’s still not over it. They were terrific play-fighters when they were pups (I referred to them as the Doggies in those days, to confuse them and forestall palace coups) and so they got the names of retired WWF wrestlers, Spike and Rocco. Anyhow, Spike (a wonderful name for a cat, IMNSHO) tells me he wouldn’t turn a hair (and he has a hell of a lot of 'em) If you named your new guy Rocco. He also says, not so modestly, that calling the new guy Spike might give him a little more edge. Not that my Spike has any edges; big boy, but still: 20 pounds, and refuses to lose weight. True story, some of you might remember: Hank Ketchum, original cartoonist of Dennis the Menace, did a story arc once in which Dennis adopts a stray cat. He names the cat Hotdog. The primary theme of the story arc was that absolutely none of the other regular characters in the strip could accept that a cat could be named Hotdog. Throughout the arc, one character after another argues with Dennis that you can’t name a cat that, and Dennis challenges them all to explain why not. After that, Hotdog became a semi-regular critter in the strip. Apparently Hotdog and Ruff got along well. ---

How about “Chairman Meow”? Yes, I’m taking that from the Philip Dick novel “The Devine Invasion”. In a similar circumstance, I temporarily named my tom, who looks a lot like yours, that before settling on Clark. ---

Now that is a very good point. I used to have a cat who I sometimes called The Cat With The Very Long Name, because he’d accumulated so many names. My family (scattered across various states, they’ve only seen a picture of the cat) currently seems to be uniting on Omer; on the grounds that they say it’s Hebrew for “to (singular masculine) speak.” I’m still undecided. ---

That’s funny – I suggested the name Eddy for a friend’s cat who was constantly climbing into their kayak, which was in the basement, and that’s what they named him. ---
