There was another chimpanzee mauling in California in 2005. The victim’s name was St James Davis. If you do a Google search, you can find details of the case and see photos, which are not pleasant. ---

It’s funny in The Planet of the Apes lore chimpanzees were pacifists while the gorillas were militant and aggressive. ---

I have a question. It seems to me that most chimpanzee attacks on humans have been by habituated chimps. Either by captive chimps kept as pets or formerly captive chimps being kept in sanctuaries or on preserves. You can even argue that Frodo, a truly wild chimp, was habituated to human contact in some degree. Have there ever been documented attacks on humans by truly wild chimps that do not regularly encounter humans? Do they tend to shy away from man instead of acting aggressively to humans in their perceived territory? ---

Wow, [this was an incredible story about St. James Davis with a brutal ending](http://www.esquire.com/features/chimpanzee-attack-0409) though, as the article says, not what you would guess the ending to be. Compelling reading. The pictures are not pretty. ---

Man, it does not pay to fuck with these animals. Or be around 'em, for that matter. I admit to being a specieist(?). I generally take the attitude of keeping a wide berth of other animals, with the exception of the domesticated ones. And even some of them I give the stink eye. I will happily watch chimps, apes, etc. on Discovery but I have no compunction to be within 100 yards of 'em. That goes for you too, bears, alligators, deer, etc. ---
