Was this a twenty-four hour volcano? If not, someone should have shut it down after dark to save energy. You know; like Yellowstone turns off its geysers at night. And for cleaning and routine maintenance. ---

Where were the guard rails? I thought all volcanoes came with guard rails? ---

I’ve actually done that climb - not at 1am, but early. It was 20 years ago - you just climbed up and walked around. There was _nothing_ in terms of protection, “Indonesian Park Rangers” watching for unwise tourists, rails - I don’t even remember signs. All there was was a young kid with a basket of bottled water he carted up to sell to tourists like me (to this day I remember the final slog of the ascent and feeling all proud only to see a 10-year-old kid, with a basket slung over his shoulder with, like, 20 or more bottles of water (far heavier than anything I was carrying) just looking at me like “stoopid tourist - want some water?”) Anyway, there was nothing obviously bubbling or super hot - but I didn’t hike around looking for trouble. But there were parts of the summit where you could tell the ground was a bit warmer (which is kinda freaky if you think about it) and there were places you realized you probably shouldn’t go. I could easily see some moderately adventurous twit not realizing what they were getting themselves into… ---
