Another facebook unfriending

I think it’s good for kids to have something to look forward to that they get as a benefit of getting older and more responsible. She has enough other ways to be social with her friends that waiting and demonstrating her responsibility was a good thing for her. I’m not particularly concerned about the actions of theoretical other people who may or may not access her page- it’s just a good lesson in deferred gratification in a culture where material rewards can come pretty easy.

Even if the friend wasn’t the original one to have created the saying that everyone seems to like, he still would have had to have it on his profile and Jack still would have had to be friends with that person. So my original point still stands: Jack didn’t bother to chastise the actual person with the status update, just John.

People, please stop using abbreviations. I’m sure we all have access to acronymfinder.com . It’s just a pain to keep referring to it.

OK

As far as Facebook’s concerned? Dude, we think you’re 13 here, too.

Yep, it’s true.

I thought it was a law of the internet that everyone is a forty-year old sex offender?

“There are no girls on the internet,” is the official wording I think.

Given the PMs in my inbox I’d say that makes you both pedophiles!

Look, I might have the glasses, the beard, the trenchcoat AND the van but I’m not a pedophile.
I did buy a bag of candy though. You want some?

Well, the good news is that upon reflection, my husband recognized that this was a stupid mess and apologized to John and our kids for overreacting and being meddlesome. John accepted and everyone is on an even keel again. I appreciate everyone’s opinions.

Your husband should show his goodwill by friending John again.

claps

That’s nice to hear. Good for your husband. That’s a show of character on his part.

I also suspect this is the core issue this whole mess revolves around.

My friend’s daughter is 12. She’s had a facebook account for about a year now and so has ALL of her little 12 year old friends, male and female. They simply lie and enter a bogus birth year when they create the account, putting their age at 17 and 18.

Since the new school year started, a couple of the girls have turned into bullies. They’ve been using facebook to carry the bullying and fighting even further. My friend doesn’t really know that much about the internet (she uses email, period) so she asked me to see what was going on. These boys and girls are 12 and the way they were posting on facebook, I would never have guessed it. He’s MY boyfriend, I’ve got to get a new girlfriend, You are so sexy in that pic!, I dumped him yesterday so now I’m dating Todd, Suzie’s a bitch, I’m gonna kick his ass , fuck u, he’s all mine … it went on and on. They’re only 12! I couldn’t believe it!

When we were 12, that is NOT what we were talking about nor did we use that kind of language. My friend’s daughter seemed to be into the boys but it was a few of the other girls and boys that were posting the inappropriate language. Two specific girls were especially nasty.

I was glad to report to my friend that her daughter was not involved in the bullying, kept her language clean but she had some very questionable friends. I advised my friend to delete her daughter’s account and make her wait until she was a little older. She agreed. Account deleted.

FYI - When you use the delete account option in facebook, there is a two week “just in case you change your mind” waiting period before the account is actually deleted. If you log on to that account at any time during the two weeks, your delete option becomes null and void and then you have to go through the delete account option again, starting the two week waiting period over again. Found this out the hard way.
