If you look at the bidder detail on the monkey thing, some of the 10k plus bidders retracted thier bids because someone offered to do it for them for free.

Since eBay has discontinued the auction, I don’t have any idea what this is about. However, I remember an auction where the bidder was evidently a newbie from Germany and put his bid in DM instead of US$. This resulted in a bid of over $1,000,000!
