Another Obama Giveaway

There was no COLA for Social Security for 2009 either. But the things that a lot of seniors spend money on did increase (insurance, hospitalization, medicine).

I could live with that a lot easier if Bank of America wasn’t changing the terms on my credit account again. (Ha ha. I fixed them. I paid it off months ago.) Whatever happened to the notion of putting an end to these ridiculous interest agreements and bizarre interest rates? And why is everyone who works for Goldman Sucks getting a bazillion dollar bonus while I don’t get $30 more a month? Why does a gallon of gasoline for a military vehicle in the Middle East cost $400 according to MSNBC?

The audacity of giving SS recepients $250! The government has to draw the line somewhere.

Come. Tread on me.

After all the stimuli that have gone out over the last year, why do we need a new one? If we needed this much more money to print up, why not have done it last time we decided to stimulate the economy?

Completely untrue, in fact the COLA for 2009 was the highest since 1982.

It stimulated the economy. Money to the poor or unemployed goes back into the economy. Money to Goldman in TARP funds stimulated acquisitions and bonuses. That was a huge waste .There is no patriotism in bankers. Just high rolling thieves.

This is hilarious. First, you start by praising reasoned criticism instead of oversimplifications and whatnot, then you immediately launch into an attack on “Right Wing Marketeers” for what you* think* they’d do if Obama didn’t do this.

Time to look in the mirror, Mr. Oversimplification.

And since when do free marketers get their panties in a twist when governments don’t hand out free money? Your oversimplification doesn’t even make sense.

But first you admit, in a backhanded way, that conservatives actually oppose these handouts for good reason:

Your hatred of all things on the right is leading you into incoherence.

Then of course Squink and gonzomax have to jump in and turn this reasonable criticism of Obama into an attempt to bash Republicans, as usual.

But good on Simplicio and RTFirefly for staying on topic and making some actual good points.

As for the subject at hand, the big problem with this from a stimulative and social justice point of view is that the money is being handed out to all seniors. First of all, Seniors are the most likely people to save the additional money instead of spending it. Second, there are a lot of very wealthy seniors who don’t need this money. Obama would have done more good, both in terms of stimulus and easing financial hardship, by spending an equivalent amount of money by giving one-time rebate checks to people who are currently unemployed.

If you ask me, the likely motivation for this has a lot more to do with shoring up support from seniors for his health care plan. They’re the ones who are really going to get shafted. They’ve already got universal coverage, and the plan requires major cuts to Medicare. Obama’s simply trying to buy them off with a gift.

This is not chump change, by the way. The cost of this is about 12.5 billion dollars - more than half the budget of NASA.

Ah, so the stimulus package was just a pretext so that Obama could pass a few dollars under the table. I’m glad that he’s now gotten around to stimulating the economy and feel much better about it.

“Huey P. Obama”? Very droll. Asinine, unsupportable, and totally bogus, but very droll.

(Note to puppy Dopers: Huey Newton was a 60’s radical who, like Obama, was browner than mayonaisse and to the left of Chuck Norris. This is likely an attempt at humor, tighty righty style, which most resembles a dirty joke told by an adding machine…)

It’s pretty much a given that if additional funds weren’t issued that the right wingers would be pissing and moaning about how Obama is screwing the old people.

I think the reference was to Huey P. Long, noted advocate of wealth redistribution.

Is that what you react. I was going to say think but you showed none of that.
I was on subject by saying I don’t agree that the cost of living for the average person is dropping.
Then I defended the last money to seniors as saying it was stimulative . Both on topic and neither mentioned republicans.
Your getting so sensitive, Rush.

I’m sorry, I substituted your name for Voyager’s. I owe you an apology.

Obama’s original stimulus plan may have been too small, and what was actually passed by Congress was less than what the administration originally asked for. And (again according to Paul Krugman) some of the things that were cut from the original stimuls were the things that would have been most effective.

I took it as a reference to Huey Pierce Long, not Huey Percy Newton.

Certainly possible, the comparison is just about as valid. We can safely rule out Baby Huey. Pretty sure.

A simple truth provided for context now counts as Republican bashing in your eyes Sam? That’s pathetic.

That 12.5 billion is still chump change compared to Bush’s $48 billion in 2008. Yes, Bush gave away more than twice the budget of NASA!
I fail to recall your horror at the time. Was it four times larger than your horror today, or is it OKIYAAR?
I didn’t like it back then, and I’m on record as saying I don’t like it this time around. Can you say the same, or do you really want to prtend that Obama’s giveaway is some sort of new and totally unprecedented abuse of power?

I’m pretty sure I opposed that too. You keep wanting to peg me as some Bush sycophant, but the fact is I disagreed with almost all of his domestic policy. If this board’s search functions weren’t so defective, I’d go back and search and give you some examples.

Yup. The Kingfish.

Who was it trying to do the pegging as a Republican basher here Sam? Hint: it was not me.
I’m still at a loss as to how you think we could have a reasonable discussion of the current giveaway without ever acknowledging the recent experiences the nation’s had with such giveaways. Is it that you wanted to be the one to bring up Bush’s giveaways, and felt trumped when an American, and a Democrat at that, beat you to the punch?

Isn’t that a reverse “Clinton got a blowjob” argument? Can’t there be a reasonable determination on the merits of this proposed giveaway, considering the present economic situation? No one is denying that it can be done, or that it has been done in the past.

What seperates a $250 increase in SS payments over a $250 tax cut?

Also, financial aid to people who will actually spend it (food stamps as an example) is a good way to grow GDP and create jobs. So the money is not being destroyed, it is going into consumer demand which is struggling right now and taking the economy down with it.

I keep trying to think of a way to make a joke involving the name Kermit T. Frog and am drawing a blank.

Damn my lack of creativity.
