Another "recommend a laptop" thread: A chemist needs one for work

Another site has these two options:

Intel® Celeron® M 380 (1.6 GHz) vs Intel® Pentium® M Processor 725A (1.6 GHz) for a $100 difference.

This one isn’t a bad deal

It does look nice. I’m still not sure about the processor though. The Celerons are certainly cheaper, but I don’t know if their reduced performance will be noticeable enough for me to cough up more money. I’ve been reading reviews to try to find an answer.

The only difference between Celery and Pentiums are the cache. Celeries are basically Pentiums that didn’t yield a full cache and so they cut off the defective half and package them as Celerons. This does make them less efficient since the CPU has to work more instead of relying on it’s cache. The performance difference is probably on the low single number percentage in benchmarks. In real world performance you might not be able to notice it. If you’re trying to skimp to save money I’d say it’s a good way, especially since most laptop motherboards are slot CPUs and are upgradable. You’d have to make sure by reading some documents about the motherboard though.
